Why can't I want to be healthy?

I don't understand why everyone thinks I am having WLS surgery to look better. Yes I will be losing weight and that will improve the apearance of my body. But for me I want to be healthier. I want to play with my grandchildren like I did my children. I want to ride a roller coaster in comfort and see the amazement on their faces. I want to live the rest of my life without obesity complications. I would like to walk around the zoo or Disneyland with them without my joints aching. I want to be able to play tag with them and still be able to breath. Why do people assume I just want to look good? Do they not realize that 100+ lbs of extra weight is taking a toll on my body and future health? I actually had a woman (she was plus size) tell me I need to embrace my body and be happy with myself. To quit worrying about society's view of my body....Ummm.......hello I could care less what people think of my body. This is about my health. Diabetes runs rampant in my family. I have asthma already I don't need 100 lbs of fat squishing my poor lungs even more. Sorry but I am just so tired of people making it about my physical appearance. Yes it will change but with it so will my chances at a healthier future.

Let them assume whatever they want. as long as  you know the real reason that is what counts. btw, I was one of those be happy with your body people until my health started declining. Now I want to have surgery to feel better physically and mentally. and hey if you get a banging body in exchange for better health.. I say Yipppeeeee!!!

I think people are slow to realize how really hard on our bodies this extra weight is.  Couple the extra weight with some extra age-they'll be singing a different tune.  And for some reason it's socially acceptable to comment on appearance-you could go up to an aquaintance and say "you have such a pretty face, if you'd lose a few pounds you'd be a knockout ' (I would never say that to anyone , just a common example).  You'd be thought a nutcase if you went up to the same person and said "Wow, I bet your heart and liver are enlarged and you are prediabetic.

I hear ya!!  I agree 100%!!!  Some people just don't get it...  It is going to get old telling the reasons (the REAL reasons) over and over, but they need to know. The world does not revolve around beauty and what others think of everyone.  Having this surgery for vanity reasons will not make anyone happy.  That is not the reason we are going through this, and it is NOT the easy way out.  I had lunch with my sister today who had RNY 4 1/2 years ago, and watching her eat, even this far out, is a wake-up call to me.  I know it is a lifestyle change that will follow me for the rest of my life.  There's no cheating. people just don't get it...
