liver question
Hey there, new to the site, thank you guys for being there - its been awesome to watch and learn, thought I would ask a question though - has anyone experienced liver problems? My blood work showed my liver enzymes were like 60 when they are suppose to be between 3-30 so they did an ultrasound and I am waiting for the official results. The nurse stated today that my liver was enlarged. What does that mean? Any info out there?
That is going to be a good Dr. Gornichec question. Once you get your answer, it would be so appreciated if you would let us know what you find out.
I googled this question and came up with this:
Common causes of elevated liver enzymes include:
- Side effect of medication, such as certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cholesterol medications, antibiotics or anti-seizure medications
- Drinking alcohol
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Elevated triglycerides
- Infection, such as viral hepatitis and mononucleosis
- Autoimmune disorders of the liver and bile ducts, such as autoimmune hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis or primary biliary cirrhosis
- Metabolic liver disease, such as hemochromatosis or Wilson's disease
- Excessive use of certain herbal supplements, such as kava, comfrey, pennyroyal or skullcap
- Gallstones
- Tumors of the liver, pancreas or bile ducts

Having an enlarged liver and other conditions of the liver are actually what prompted me to have the RNY. Since doing so, I've avoided a serious liver surgery where I'd have a tennis ball sized tumor removed from it. Many overweight people have enlarged livers, and they tend to shrink after surgery. It's basically a "fatty liver" and is a result of excess weight. Don't worry yourself too much about it unless your doctor tells you to worry. Trust me, you can research yourself right into a big scare (I did), so just take it easy. :)
