Hubby's really good question

I love that he can ask a question like this, because I would've never thought to ask. Okay, day 10 of pre-op diet.  It's 8:00 at night.  Nothing to eat & drink after midnight. Why can't I go to Subway and get one last "real meal" before my surgery.  C'mon...will my liver really enlarge in just the 12 hours until my surgery? Cathy

I didn't have a long pre-op diet, but I stopped eating solids at 11:00 am on Wednesday and had surgery about 3 pm in on Thursday. I read in my book that a lot of people suffer from upset stomachs, etc because they go for one last supper?  I had my last supper about a week before the surgery.  Ironically, I just ate ribs again avour 6 weeks later-of course, I only ate two this time.  But really, the last supper isn't that at all. When your body is being operated on-you don't want those digestive fluid flowing or your liver working on toxins-it really is best to follow Dr. orders. The neatest thing about the second rib dinner was that there was absolutely no guilt, I got very full in a reasonable (entirely) amount of food.

I had this explained to me in detail, but I don't have the energy to go through the whole thing. I will tell you that the issue isn't just enlargement, it also has to do with rigidity. A liver that is processing crap is alot more rigid and is more likely to be damage than a nice relaxed liver that hasn't been working real hard lately. This is actually a serious issue and I've heard of Dr.s closing someone right back up WITHOUT doing the procedure due to this. It's that serious. I know you already have such fear of something like this happening, so I would follow the instructions word for word even if it doesn't make sense. BTW, I'm going to pray for you and believe that everything will turn out beautifully.

My question to hubby: Why would you want to risk your wife's health and surgery for a sub sandwich??  Honestly, itsn't NOT a last meal anyway. Cathy will eat again, just not as much and isn't her health and happiness the most important thing?  I say stick to the rules, you'll have a whole lifetime of eatting ahead.  HUGS

CATHY!!! thats a hoot! Okay tell hubby this for me. Its the day of surgery 6 am in the morning the doctor has scrubbed in u are in a nice zombie asleep. The doctor makes the first incision and out pops a foot long  sub fully loaded with all the toppings they offer. He pushes the foot long back in sews you back up. U wake with insions but no band. Doc comes in and says foot long haw...thought u got get passed that one on me hehe. Heres your bill of XXX amount of dollars...enjoy! A last meal is one that is the last u will ever eat. Just cause you are getting banded does not mean you won't eat again. It just means you won't need even a 6 inch sub. DANG now I am craving a 6 inch whole wheat tuna sub with banana peppers! URRRGH.  must drink water reaches over for the glass with eyes glazed thinking of the sub.....

I wonder if just licking the sub would count against it all?  Ha, ha! I remember this same feeling!  I kept thinking...I wonder if I could just lick it and get the taste.                                                                                            That's suppose to be a smiling licker!
