Forgot to mention.....
My dog of 12 years died the day before my surgery. We all took it really hard and we miss him so much.
My daughter is 5 and that was her baby. She pulled him in her wagon, held him in the chair like a baby and would cover him up with her. That was the first time the kids had to deal with anything like that.
But the good news is that we still have 2 more dogs. One of them is also 12 years old and she has now lost hear hearing. Then we have a 2 year old golden retreiver.

That is so hard. I write a blog www. poidogz.blogspot.com about dogs/dog rescue/how much dogs mean to us. Sometimes other critters get in there as well.
One of the reasons I have so many dogs (4) is that I wouldn't do so well if I lost my one and only. Also, I think dogs do best in groups.
Your dog was a part of your family, and even his death is teaching your kids. What wonderful friends they are!
Carebear, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I share in your grief. My mini schnauzer died on June 13th. She was also 12. We have one other dog, a boxer who is 11, and I fear her time is near as well. My kids have never known life without either of them. It has been an interesting adjustment. Maybe our dogs are playing together in Heaven right this minute.... nice thought, huh?
