Had my surgery on July 26, Dr Gornichec at Baptist Hospital.  Everything went great! I still have pain, mostly incision pain, and a little shoulder pain from the gas.  I gained 10lbs in the hospital overnight.  Boy! That is a lot of fluid they pump into you! I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it takes to lose that weight from all that fluid, and about how long does it take for the "gas" pain to go away??

Congratulations!  I'm so glad to hear all went well. I haven't weighed since I had surgery-things are too unstable right now to get a true reading.  Concentrate on resting and taking care of yourself -drinking lots of liquids seems to help the gas go away faster-I don't know why, but it does.   The gas pain is gone in about 4 days, the incisions take a little longer.  After 4-5 days I didn't have any problems except when getting out of bed-so I gave up naps (oh horrors). I found that as long as I got up and walked every couple of hours the gas wasn't painful, but oh LORD, the big belly is a bit frightening, isn't it? My recliner is still my friend-when I'm tired I just want to sit in it rather than lie down.  Lying down seems to pull on the port stiches. Today I was able to drive my family to Okarche, pick a few apples and drive my aunt's golf cart.  I'm tired, but not exhausted.  The first week though I was really really tired and just rested as much as possible-maybe one short trip to the store a day.

Congrats to both of you on your recent surgeries.  As far as how long it will take before you begin losing, well, it really is different for everyone.  Honestly though, it will begin happening soon, and before you know it, you won't believe the new you!

I am so happy for you! As for the water retention..it make take a week. But get up and walk...and then walk some more. When you walk the fluid is being circulated thru and it helps to get rid of it. Take gas-x for gas pains and just think next month at this time you will be smaller! BTW did you happen to name your band? lol just thought I would throw that in. blessings...pattye

Hi,

I slept in the recliner for about a week.  It was one of those moments when you get up in the morning and can say, “I feel better today”.  But, I was on home oxygen for two weeks.  Most people are well into the loss column at their two-week checkup.

Colleen, Welcome to the losing side!  I'm so excited for you! The gas will subside in time.  Walking is the best thing you can do to get rid of the gas.  The weight loss of the water weight will start when it's ready to start.   As long as you are going by the guidelines that all of us bandsters are to go by, then it will start.  You have to make sure you are getting in your liquids and it will make it come off.  Isn't that so wierd that we have to intake water to make water go away? Anyway, welcome!  Also, you've got a great surgeon! Tonja
