Just looking around, getting aquainted with the message boards and wrapping my mind around having a new healthier life.  My first visit with the surgeon is on July 18th.  I'm excited - don't know what to expect.  My insurance is sending me to Texas to have my Surgery.  I was wondering if there is  anyone out there that has had to travel for insurance compliance.

You found the right place....  Who is your insurance carrier?  I've never heard of an insurance company making your go to another state for wls.   Do you know why?  Did they give a reason?

My insurance carrier is NRECA National Rural Electrical Co-Operative Association, my husband works for a rural power company.  They have a company called United Resources Network that handles their weight loss surgery approval process and apparently have strict quidelines for the surgeons they approve.  Apparently, the surgeon has to have a less than 3% complication rate after surgery amoung other critiria and the facility the surgeries are performed at have to qualify to be a Center of Excellance/COE.  They told me that a hospital in Norman and St. Francis in Tulsa are in the middle of getting their paperwork in to qualify for a COE, but they didn't know how long it will be.  So, I didn't want to wait any longer so I signed up with the group in Texas that they had already approved.  The insurance company will pay us back for travel expenses and lodging for my support person while undergoing the pre-op appts etc.  ....sorry for the long answer.  (Frankly, I'm just glad someone responded to my post)  Everyone here seems so positive.  My mother had her surgery done by Dr. Grosope in 2003 and my father and brother had their MGB done in Joplin MO.

It's actually not that uncommon for people to travel for surgery. I have several friends whose insurance has required an out of state dr.

I know I'll find most of my answers on July 18th, but I was curious if they schedule the nutritionist and the physc eval etc on same days so I don't have to travel to Dallas so much.   Also, I am filling out the paperwork for the surgeons office and wonder, most of my weight loss attempts are not monitored by Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem etc - will that hurt me from getting approved?  The insurance company wants a 6 mo physician managed care before you can be approved, which I am in the process of doing.

Good luck in your journey.  However, I know the Hospital in Norman already is a COE.   I would call to check that out if you really wanted to stay in Oklahoma.  Dr. Keith was my surgeon and I love him.   http://www.surgicalreview.org/locate.aspx?state=US-OK#srchResults (this is from the ASBS website, the people who give the COEs.)

Welcome to OH! I think that your insurance may have got something wrong. Both hospitals in OKlahoma Norman, and St Francis are COE.  Personally I would call my insurance company and have them check ou their info.. Norman was approved in 2006 again.

I just moved up here from Dallas-Dr. Provost is well known and well respected in the field.  I got tired of the insurance battle am going to Tijuana for a self pay lap band, but if I had decent insurance or tons of money I would have gone with Dr. Provost.
