Jen,

I had the gastric sleeve done with Dr Curry and I don't have one regret. I've lost almost 40 lbs in 2 months and have had no complications. Dr Curry is located about 40 minutes south of Dayton Ohio and he has done tons of surgeries. He also does the lap band as well. I chose the gastric sleeve for several reasons... one of the top being that once I recovered from surgery I did not need to go in for fills... plus I did quite a bit of research and for me and my lifestyle, the sleeve was the better choice for me. As someone said before, make sure you check out a few surgeons, you'll know when you have found the right one!!

I RNY on 2/9/10 and I'm doing GREAT!  The only thing I regret is that I didn't do it sooner1

I choose RNY because I was over 300 pounds with many co-morbidities.  After talking with my surgeon we both agreed that RNY would help me lose weight quickly and would resolve many of my health concerns.  I'm off over 1/2 my meds.  Insulin has gone way, way down & my GP is confident as I lose more I can come off it completely.

My surgeon was Dr. Trace Curry of Cincinnati (Evandale).  I'm actually closer to Columbus but after attending a seminar with Dr. Curry I really felt good about him.  He has had adjustable band surgery himself.  Many of those who work in his office have had one surgery or another.  The staff is very caring & helpful.  They were great about helping me meet my insurance requirements, getting the info to them as soon as it was ready & staying in touch with me through the process.

If you want any more info please PM me or if you just would like to talk with some who had RNY.

God Bless!

Lorraine

I know a few people who have gone to Mexico for surgery.  They are very competent  surgeons and their price is very affordable.  What I can't stress enough is considering how you are going to follow thru with post op support.  If you have no problems with travel, then it's not a problem.  But I would really consider who you will go to if there are emergency issues and who will you follow up with for normal questions about your surgery and diet.  Some local surgeons will not look at you because you didn't have your surgery with them.

My recommendation is to do some research and talk to some people who went down there and see what they thought and if they would have done anything different.  You can check youtube.com and find plenty of people who would be more than willing to discuss their journey with you.

Take care
Fred

I just wanted to add what I have experianced. I had the sleeve done on November 10th 2009 with Dr Myers and it's went very well. I have to agree with not wanting to recomend a particular surgery but I am very happy with my choice. I have lost almost 100lbs so far and the weight loss has slowing but thats predictable. The Fresh Starts program has been great. Before the surgery  there was an in depth evaluation both diet and psycological, very thorogh. After surgery they monitor you closely and have visits with the dietician. Also there is an exer**** program to help the weight loss. This has been a very positive experiance for me. Good Luck!

Wow, that is so sad, that lack of support from friends and family. Well, you have support here sister!
The restriction from the surgery will allow you to eat MUCH less and thus lose weight. Easy way? No, it is the hard way, you are risking your life with surgery and committing to an eating plan for the rest of your life.
This surgery is only a tool, one you can abuse, or use correctly as you decide.
Why use a rock to pound in a nail instead of a nail gun? This is your nail gun. You can get the job done faster and better this way. The ghrelin will go away.
Hey, here is a web site you can go to, and watch their shows from the first one to the most current. It will help you loads and is so funny! Called Bariatric TV. http://bariatrictv.com/
I don't mind your questions at all, you are more than welcome to do this. You might have to stiffen up and tell your 'friends' that this is your decision to make and if they are going to poison you with negativity, there's the door. They don't have a right to control you. Right now you are bigger than them and this surgery will make you smaller and one of them will become the biggest one.
I do hope you come to the show, it would be good to meet you in person.

Hi Jody,

Thanks so much for being so great and answering my ?  I'm really hoping to come to the show and meet you and see your mini horses!  I do so love animals and like I said have wanted a horse since I was like 3 or 4.  You'll probably think I'm such a dork when you see me around them petting them!  Which just tickles me that if I come I can pet them!!!  My hubby mapped it out for me this morning and said it's a very easy drive.  But I am such a CHICKEN when it comes to driving...esp. if I've never been there before and being alone...so I'm trying to talk myself into it.  I've told some of my friends and they're encouraging me to go.  :)

Now can I poke into your life once again??  You said you were pretty deep into depression when you decided to do this.  Me too.  And everyone keeps asking me why do I think I can do it with the surgery if I don't think I can do without.  I'm not sure how to answer that!  And when I say that I can have minimal success on my own but I always gain it back they come back with what makes me think that won't happen with the surgery.  And I just don't know how to answer that but I just have this feeling that I can do it with the "push" of the surgery.  And it is REALLY making me ANGRY that people keep phrasing it like "doing it the 'hard' way" versus doing it the "easy way."  Like it's something to be ashamed of.  Kind of like Starr Jones denying it for so long.  Ya' know what...I'll be the FIRST person to admit it if I do it!  Just like people acting like being on an anti-depressant is something to be ashamed of and you should work towards getting off of it at all costs.  Forget that...mine helps me get through my days.  And now I'm getting the well I think you're selling yourself short deal.  You really can do this if you just put your mind to it.  (HEAVY SIGH)  It's just so frustrating as most of my friends I talk to and confide in are no where near the weight I'm at.  So they can't possibly understand what it's like being me and living how I've lived.  And I know I'm heading towards diabetes and probably heart attack...and don't really care...passive suicide as my sister calls it.  So if I do the surgery and start losing weight and start feeling good about myself and I CAN DO THIS then that's great!  One of my friends says she's heard it could possibly take 10 years off your life.  Well the way I look at it...I'd rather have 10 less years of life to live healthy then 10 grueling years of in and out of hospitals and feeling like yuck...ya' know??

I'm sorry Jody...I seem to have latched on to you and just type you books.  Forgive me?  I think it's cuz you used Dr. Myers and I'm thinking of him and you have HORSES and that just makes you freaking AWESOME in my book to begin with...and I just like your honesty, advice and kindness!
So I'll shut up for now and promise to try not to write you a book!
Hugs,
Jen
