Hello All, It has been awhile since I have been on here. I would like some advice please. I have finally decided to go see my pcp about depression. I have done some depression screenings and they all say I am severely depressed. I think I have known this for awhile but have been in denial. I thought losing weight would help me get out of this "funk" but it hasn't. Now, I am starting to gain a few pounds and I am scared that I have screwed up this tool. I am tired all the time, can't sleep at night, just lie around with no energy to do much. I am miserable. I want to know what meds work for any of you so I can go to my doctor with an idea of what to take. please help with any advice you can give me. Thanks, Janet

Hi Janet, I take quite a few medications for depression. But the 2 I've taken the longest is zoloft 250 mg. and ativan 3mg. I also take Risperdol for a mood stabalizer. I know what its like to feel the way you do, and its one of the worst feelings. You know theres a problem but dont know how to fix it to make it better. It's awful. But these meds are helping me. I havent had surgery yet, and I am hoping that once I do, alot of my depression will be gone. But I doubt it. I have alot of problems from childhood and death in the family, etc. But I do hope you get to feeling better. ((((HUGS))))))

I am glad your helping yourself. It may be a short term thing. I am on lexapro and it is not working for me. I am going tuesday to get it changed. I did not gain any weight on this. Make sure to ask for a depression pill that does not cause weight gain. Being treated for this will make you feel better. Hugs Barb

Hi Janet, I have been on Celexa or the generic for it for many years (citalopram?) . It is a wonderful drug. My depression did not go away with wieght loss surgery and I have a good friend who the same thing- she has been on zoloft for years and hers did not go away with surgery either. You are right to go to your PCP and get help. Good luck. Chris

Hi Janet, I take Effexor 75 mg and it started working for me (I swear) the day I started taking it. It has been a godsend for me. My daughter takes Prozac and is a changed person. This is a good decision for you to explore. No one needs to feel bad day in and day out. You need to quit beating yourself up for the chemical imbalance going on in your body. It's not your fault!!! Repeat that to yourself----"It's NOT my fault I feel this way" and my prayers and good wishes are with you. Laura

Hello Janet I just got done reading your wls jornal and let me just say you amaze me...the courage you have shown to not only go through one of the wls but two procedures, and through your second journey the nightmare of all the insurance ups and downs and all the extra testing and to find out you have PCOS i can only imagine what it would have been like. I think that once the body "stops" for a minete after all of that hurry up to wait stuff we all go through a change and maybe as youve said your change was getting depression with the deniel to go along with it.. I am so glad youve decided to seek out help, i know what its like not feeling, sleeping, eating (and gaining at the same time), so tired it takes energy just to open your eyes and find out the day isn't any better than the day before.. but i have also found out that people like you give me courage and strength to keep going and praying that through it all you have peace and strength to also keep going..I can tell ya that 2 years ago is when i changed and my depression is much less and i think it had everything to do with me giving myself to God for the first time in my life, i got baptised in Sept 2004 and i quit smoking 7/2004 i wont say i don't get depressed its just a bit different theese days.. i still remember the old depression (i pray i never go back to those days) and it humbles me now, it also makes it easier for me to understand what other people go through. My husband is bi-polar and has social anxiety disorder he is on zolof and he is a changed person, he stilll has his days and he still cant bring himself to leave the house most of the time but his depression level is so much better, he accualy smiles more now.. well i hope i didn't bable to much please take care and no that your in my prayers God bless you Paula

Well, at least now you know your funk is more than just self-esteem. The best news is that it's treatable. I was one of the first Paxil users about 13 years ago. I had never taken anti depressants before and I was concerned about feeling "drugged". On the contrary, I just felt like myself again, nothing more, nothing less. Fortunately for me, though, when I had my son, I never had to take them again. It's like the chemical changes of pregnancy cured me....or the constantly joy a child brings to ones life. Take your pick. Anyhow, I would recommend Paxil, but do ask your doc for their recommendations. Anti depressants have come a long way and there's probably others that are great, too.

Hi Janet, I have been on Zoloft for about 8 years now and I truly do not know where I would be right now if I were not on it! It may not be a stretch to say I would probably be dead. Depression is a serious illness and I am so happy that you have decided to seek help. I hope and pray you find the right doctor to treat you and the right medication to help heal you!! Sometimes it takes a little time to find the one that will work best for you but when you do it will be so worth it. Take care, Janet! LindaLee
