It is Roux-en-y surgery performed via laproscopically--versus an "open" incision.

Jenny, It can be very confusing but the term "lap" just means a surgery that is done with small incisions and scopes. Lots of surgeries can be done this way so it doesn't help when patients say I'm having the "lap" surgery. A RNY or Roux-en-Y is a gastric bypass, which means the stomach is made very tiny to reduce the amount of food you eat, and some small intestine is bypassed. A RNY can be done either by the old-fashioned "open" technique with a larger incision, or the newer, less-invasive "lap" or "laparoscopic" technique. Bands are also done laparoscopically, to make things even more confusing. Hope this helps! Dr. C

What a miracle that they can do all this with a scope. I have had caesarean birth and gallbladder surgery, so I think I could handle this. Thank you very much for your time.
