antidepresents
I have been on antidepresents for about 10 years. I know when I went on them for the first time 10 years ago there was an adjustment time.
I had WLS 11/2003 so I have been on them 2 1/2 years post op with no trouble. I still go to my PCP every three months to get checked and see how things are going. Now my PCP and I are trying to go off them slowly.
I take Prozac and Wellbutrin SR. Like I said we're adjusting the dosage to try to get me off them.
I would just keep talking to your doc and pharmacy, tell each what the other is saying. Do some research on the internet also and see what info you can give back to them.
Everyone responds different to meds, you might just need to adjust the dosage or change to another med.
Good Luck,
Robin W
Taking antidepressants is a game to find the right one that works for you...If you do not feel right taking the wellbutrin tell your doc you want to try something else....There are soooo many antidepressants out there...I personally take Lexapro and Wellburtrin and believe me they have saved my life....I hope this helps....Kelly
Was wondering if anyone knows of a low dose antidepressant that I can take that works? I have tried a few and they make me feel freaky. I am on Ativan right now for my panic and anxiety. Please let me know. Did anyone have the feelings of depression after the wls and had to be put on medicine? I feel I am always worried that something could go wrong with me. Even though it has been 2 yrs since my wls.
Thanks

Sasyshorts,
Have you ever been on Lexapro? It's a newer medication in the same family as Prozac and Paxil. Prozac never did anything for me, and I experienced temporary relief on Paxil (that is until I stopped taking it--stupid me!). I think I'm doing better on Lexapro, though, than I ever did on the other two. I have social anxiety disorder and severe bouts of depression, and I think a touch of generalized anxiety as well. I was put on Lexapro in the fall and feel that I have done very well on it. I started on 10mg and moved up to 20mg for the winter in case my symptoms got worse over the holidays. I am still on the 20mg and feel that I couldn't have gotten through all the stress I've experienced lately without it! It's not right for everyone, though, especially anyone who may be bipolar (not sure if that applies, though), so I would recommend asking your doctor about any potential side effects or interactions with anything else you may be taking. Also, you'll need to be sure to pair the medication with therapy to experience the most benefit. Good luck!!

I personally am a big fan of prozac. It's cheap, effective, minimal side effects, and may actually reduce appetite. It's great and effective for both depression and anxiety (most people have a combination of both). I personally take it (before, during and after surgery) and prescribe this more to patients than any other antidepressant. I would recommend discussing your options with your primary care provider.
Hope that helps!
