Diabetics-be careful

I have been a diabetic for 7 years. I took four pills a day. I had surgery Sep 04 and have lost about 79#. I began to reduce my pills when I felt shaky. I was down to one pill. Last week I began to have numbness around my mouth. Didn't feel well but just tired like I couldn't sit up for very long. I was at work, getting ready to leave for the day when I experienced shaking, hunger, and began incoherant speech. My sugar was 286 and five minutes later 91. The emergency squad took me to the hospital where my sugar dropped to 40. During my tests a doctor told me that with my weight loss and taking the one pill a day, my body was producing the correct amount of insulin but the build up of the pill caused me to release more throwing me into low blood sugar. That evening my sugar dropped to 20 and I experienced what it felt like to drift out. Luckily my daughter was there, got nurses and they were able to give me glucose to bring it back up. However, I spent 4 days in the hospital waiting for the medicine to go out of my system. My blood was taken every hour and it was not until Saturday am that the count would stay up. I am off all medication now and must check by diet. I don't know if anyone has had this problem but I have been seeing my primary every three months for my diabetes and we thought things were going well. This is just for your information. I hope none of you have to experience this-it was very scary. Sandy

I had high sugar pre-op but luckily never had to take meds for it. Today I experienced sweats, being thirsty, shakey. I took my blood sugar.. it was at 89. I have been cold all weekend, so I could not understand why I was sweating. I just drank some orange juice (the light kind) and it helped. I was shaking so bad I could barely do my sugar test. It really scared me.. but thank you for you post.. we all need to be aware now it can drop too low. Hugs Julie

Judy This was a real eye opener for me. I've always taken my diabetes lightly and not worried about it since I relied on the meds. Doing the diet thing is definitely harder since I don't want much food and your diabetic diet wants the balance when I am lucky to just eat the protein. Keep checking your sugars and communicate your problems to you PCP. Keep a chart on how often you get the shakes and your levels so you can have accurate info for him/her. Best of luck Sandy
