just had surgery and am in the pureed stage, having problems getting
Betty have you try the sugar free hot chocalate mixed with water. with a scoop in it. That worked for me. Also have you tried the 40 gr protien isopure from GNC that is a fruit drink. zero carbs. There are ways to get your protein you just need to work on it. I dont think I could have drank the orange juice at your stage. I have a hard time with it now. You need to get those fluids in first.
Best wishes
Barb
Betty,
The cream of wheat nauseated me too. I think it was just the cream of wheat,
not necessarily the protein! I did much better with oatmeal. Actually, when I was where you are at, I was mainly just slurping my broth soup and popsicles still. When I moved on, I stuck with mostly liquidy things still---Atkins shakes, cream soups, and pudding made with Carb Countdown milk and unflavored Unjury. Believe it or not, the easiest things I found to eat were Wendy's chili (yes, the myth is true!) and peaches canned in Splenda (they have plastic jars of these at Kroger). I still resort to these "staples" whenever I'm feeling a little erpy.
One thing I have found is that the morning starts better with something warm---decaffinated tea or coffee. I still am having trouble with cold plain water. (used to be a favorite drink
)

Here are a couple of ideas: Tyson makes boneless, skinless roasted chicken breasts. They are a little pricey, but early on, it is worth it. Puree the chicken with Campbell's Cream of chicken Soup at Hand. You can make the puree dense or more liquid to your taste. I also cooked a turkey breast in my crockpot, made gravy and pureed the turkey with the gravy.
So, instead of trying to choke down whey protein, why not try to get some real food down? I didn't start the supplements until a couple of months out. Typical foods for me on the pureed stage : V8 juice, pureed chicken and turkey (as above), Dannon Lite and Fit yogurt, plain instant oatmeal made with Lactaid milk instead of water, pureed canned fruits in juice. I also had to have Choice DM, which is like Ensure, only for diabetics, and has vitamins and minerals in it.
My feeling was that in the first few weeks, my job was to eat and to make sure I ate well. While protein is important for healing, don't sell yourself short. I felt that this was the time I needed to start out nourishing my body with the variety of foods the dietician recommended. I didn't feel like eating, but I did it.
I had one of those little mini-Cuisenarts (sp?) and it was awesome for pureeing smaller amounts of food. Another thing was my cup warmer - kept things warm while I ate it very slowly.
Good luck!
Sue
