Hi Eyorette, I am 2 months out from surgery and I am 54 almost 55. I was concerned about the age thing too. My suregon assured me that the age was not an issue. He convinced me that my health was more important. I went ahead with the surgery on November 29, 2005 and so far I've lost 30 lbs. I've lost my appeitite, but they all say that will return. I have not posted my pictures yet. But I will. My recovery was minimal as far as pain. But I got tired very easily. I went back to work after 5 weeks. I'm glad I took all that time to recoup. If you have any more questions email me and I'll be happy to help. Bobye, Columbus, OH

Hello Eyorette! I am 53, will be 54 in a few months and just had the surgery last month! Mine was done laparoscopically and I have done well. I have a sit down job and went back to work 9days after surgery. Yes, I was tired, and sore, but actually felt better working then sitting around home. I have lost 33lbs since surgery 12/12. You are not too old by any means!

I had my surgery when I was 50. I am over a year out now and have lost 190 pounds, going from a size 30-32 to a 6-8. Its the best thing that I ever did for myself. I think losing the weight takes the aged look away from you. My head still thinks that I am obese, but everytime that I do laundry and pull out those small underpants, my heart skips a beat and I think to myself....I really do wear these! My recovery was a bit slow but I was back to work in about 7 weeks. Just take it one day at a time and listen to your body if you decide to have this surgery. Your recovery isn't going to be the same as anyone else. A co-worker was back to work in 8 days after her surgery. Another back in 3. You have lots of folks on these boards who are over 50. Your surgeon should be able to calm your fears about the age thing. Good luck to you!

Hi, I was 52, and it has been almost a year since my surgery. I went back to work full time after 2 weeks and have done great ever since. Only felt pain for about 3-4 days after coming home and was only in the hospital for 2 days after surgery. I am so glad that I had the surgery. So far I have lost 115 lbs. Have you checked out the "Over 50" forum on this board? That's a great way to get to talk to us "oldies". Go for it! Let us know if you have questions. Chris

Hi Eyorette, I was 54 when I had RNY (December 2004). Have lost 116 pounds and am at goal. I don't think it was harder for me due to age or anything like that, I did well. Only complication was one infected incision (pretty minor though really). I do think it's probably even more important for older people to exercise - I do have loose skin, not enough to need surgery, but I think a little muscle mass wouldn't hurt - might fill out some of that skin! Good luck! Hugs, Kitty B.
