Has anyone had low blood sugar after surgery? I am 7 1/2 months post-op and I have never had a problem with low blood sugar until now. If you have had this happen to you, what did you eat/drink to get your blood sugar back up? Is this one of the side effects from the surgery?
I suspect that I have low blood sugar. I pretty much have to eat something every 2-3 hours or my energy just plummets. I was gestational diabetic during one of my pregnancies and I felt the same way as I do no when I go too long without eating. I had a delayed insulin response where one minute my blood sugar levels would be fine and within minutes they'd fall rapidly and I'd have to eat or I would be sicker than a dog, shaking, sweats, etc. It was horrible. I try to eat before the shakes kick in so I stick to my protein bars and shakes as my energy source and those keep me going.
If you haven't had problems before, you might want to follow up with your pcp. They can test you fairly easily to determine if you are.
When I was hypoglycemic my physician always told me not to go for sweet, but eat protein. It's important to make sure you are getting something every 2-3 hours, not a huge amount of food, but something protein to keep you going. The OJ thing is good when you have gotten to the point of no return, and after a true episode you will feel exhausted and kinda dull. I used to eat a piece of cheese or keep a protein bar. Unfortunately, I started to eat a lot of extra food and of course gained a lot of extra weight. I think now 1 oz. of cheese or a piece of protein bar would be ideal even a spoon of peanut butter. This is something you should talk to your physician about and make sure to ask what they recommend you eat when this happens so you have it on hand.
