Question for Dr. C re: dietary guidelines
Dear Dr. Curry~
I would be ever so appreciative if you could look at the guidelines that I was given. I feel that they are off the mark.
fluid intake: 32 oz per day of an electrolyte solution, such as gatorade
protein intake: 45-50 grams per day
Eat 3x per day on solids from the 4 food group, no emphasis on protein first.
No mention of calcium as yet, but the nurse said to take a multi vit with B-12 in it. When I questioned her about the ability of a post op RNY patient to absorb B-12 from a swallowed vit, she said sure you can?? Currently, I m taking a flintstones with iron 2x per day per guidelines.
"I" have added in 1 sublingual B-12 and 1500 mg of calcium citrate liquid with D and mag, split up over the day. I am also shooting for atleast 60 grams of protein per day and have worked up to about 50 oz. of plain water or decaf tea, NOT gatorade.
As a side, i was started in the hospital on Capri Sun. Is this normal?
Jenn
Every surgeon has different guidelines, but I think you're doing the right thing with the sublingual B12 and calcium. It sounds like you know what you should be doing! We recommend Propel instead of Gatorade, less sugar therefore less dumping. Good luck,
