Questions about consulation and surgery weight
I have finally made the decision to have the surgery and found this website. I had a question about my consultation. Do i get weighed in my clothes or do I put a gown on? What bout my height? Do they measure you at the office or just ask you what height you are? My height is a little less than 5'2", I know using 5'1 would help with my approval. Also, would my surgery be canceled if my BMI wasn't 40 on the day of my surgery? I am about 5 pounds or so short of my BMI to be 40.
Thanks Josie
Josie,
We usually weigh our patients in their street clothes. We never lie about a patient's height, but we do round it off, so if you're just shy of 5' 1-and-a-half you would be listed in our system as 5' 1. If you're a pound or two shy, you might just happen to get really thirsty and have to drink a lot of water right before you get weighed... It's silly to play these games, but it's the insurance companies that make us do it. And we have never cancelled anyone the day of surgery because their BMI was less than 40 - once your data is in the system, it's "in the system."
Good luck!

PS I'm from Kentucky, and I've never heard of Flatwood!
Thanks Dr. Curry for the reply. That eases my mind alot. I am so close to the 40 BMI, and have read how hard the insurance companies are to deal with. I tend not to eat if i'm really nervous, and was afraid I would fall short of the req. 40 the day of surgery and then the surgery would be canceled.
Oh..Flatwoods is in northeast KY..near OH, KY, WVA borders. Close to Ashland. Thanks! Josie
