Why I chose a DS
Recently it was asked of me (on the DS board), why I had chosen the DS. This was my response. Some of the ladies said I should post this to the Main and Ohio message boards as well.
To the question, why a DS, I guess I'll say it as easy as I can. I got the DS because I wanted to eat like a normal person, and look like a normal person while I was eating. I can eat just about anything, and enjoy it. I can eat at an almost normal pace, and if someone doesn't notice that I've eaten less than they did, then there is no difference in how I eat. I posted last week about taking my daughters out to a steak house where I ate some appetizer, some salad, part of my baked potato, and most of my prime rib. I was full when I was done, and the meal lasted around 45 minutes, but I really enjoyed myself. I had about 1/4 of a 12 oz piece of Prime Rib left over, but I ate that when I got home.... (you gotta love prime rib!!). I've got a very good friend from work that had the RNY, and he was the main reason I started looking at WLS. He chases food around his plate with his fork, (if he was one of my kids, I'd say he was just playing with his food), and even though he lost a lot of weight, (around 125 lbs), I think he has gained back 10-15 in the past few months that I've been off work from my WLS surgery. He had his surgery in the spring of 2004, and that is one of the problems that I have always heard people talk about with the RNY is weight regain at around 18 months out.
I'm 3.5 months postop, the only eating problems I've encountered has been some excess gas if I eat too much of the wrong types of food (normally I can eat anything, but I must limit some things to smaller quantities..... or pay a price). I had some complications with my surgery that ultimately resulted in me losing most of my hearing, but that wasn't related to the DS, it was part of the risk that you undertake when you have any type of surgery. If I had to make the decision to do it again, I would.... in a New York Minute!!
I don't want to derail anyone from a decision they are sure of, but I would like for everyone that hasn't made the WLS plunge yet, to at least make an informed decision on which way to go..... Then go out and make your own best decision, and GOOD LUCK!
toodles,
kevin
It was a real HOOT!! I got to see my dad, and we had a blast. The only bummer was that my wife was unable to come with me. If you read my profile, you would find that I lost much of my hearing this summer from complications from my surgery. While I was in Florida, I went out and sang Karaoke 3 different times. The people were flabbergasted by that!!
Life is good, I am feeling better, and looking forward to a much more comfortable life!
