Hi everyone my surgery went great and I am totally off pain meds and down 38 lbs!!!!!!!but I'm havin some problems I'm having difficulty with my crushed meds and my stomach is absolutely revolting against the liquid iron. I have tried mixing it into everything I even hold my breath and as soon as it hits the back of my throat I hurl!!!! I'm not sure what todo. then it just makes me quezzy all day and I have a hard time getting anything down. I advanced to a pureed diet but today I can't get much down .I gag at the thought of my protein supplements I am nowhere near getting what I am supposed to maybe 300-500 cal a day and maybe 20 grams of protein. to day was even less I went back to clears cause everything else wasn't sittin right.I'm only vomiting when I try to take the iron. but my general feel throughoout the day is ick!water is even tasting stale to me and I love water.the odd thing is about the protein is I liked a bunch of different shakes prior to surgery and now everything nauseates me....whats a girl to do?????

Have you tried mixing your crushed meds in a liquid instead of soft food. And holding your nose each time you drink/sip. From what I understand, we go thru a phase of losing our taste buds or something like that. Nothing seems to taste the same post-op as it did pre-op The liquid iron, I remember my nephew taking that, and for the life of me I can't remember how my sister in law got it down him. If that still doesn't work then try only one at a time, and also it might be one of those things of mind over matter. sorry I can't be of much more help. Julie K Brunswick, OH

do you really need the iron. My dietien told me if I took 2 multi chewable vitiams it would have enough iron in them . She said Iron messes with your stomach bad. Take Care \ bArb

Yes I was anemic before surgery I took iron pills prior to surgery and my blood count whent up a whole gram! and in the hospital they gave me IV iron 3x to boost me up. I had my blood checked last week and everything was normal and I would like to keep it that way. I put a call in to my Doc today . I just looked at your surgery date and Its tommorrow! You will be in my prayers. happy bowel prep today

I went through the same thing with everything tasting so differently early post op. Luckily my Dr allowed me to swallow my meds intact, no crushing, no liquids, just take the pills and I did fine, and at that time I was on 14 daily meds. Maybe you could ask the Dr if you can take the meds intact??? I was even taking a horsepill of Potasium 2 times a day and it caused me no problems at all. I am feeling for ya girly.. I know you have to be miserable. I went through a phase if I even heard the blender running I wanted to hurl. EWWWW!!! Get ahold of your Dr before you get yourself dehydrated. Hugs Laura

Hang in there Karen! It well get better over time. I went through a lot of the same things. S/F popsicles were my best friends for the first few months. Talk to you doctor. It is important that he knows what is going on. It will get easier! I promise. Best of luck to you! 238/133/Goal 120

Karen, Have you tried the Viactive chews? The chocolate ones are really good and you can buy the mulivitamins and the calcium chews. That is what my doctor told me to use when I couldn't handle the vitamins. I couldn't use the chewable vitamins the consistancy of them made me gag!! Hope this helps!

HI Karen---I feel for ya---I had the same trouble early on-but it does get better. Ask your doc if you really need the iron-most people don't-if you don't, try Flintstones chewables-they were the only vitamins I could stand at the beginning-if your medicine is in tablet form, you could pick up a pill splitter at the pharmacy and cut them into very small pieces, of course that would work for capsules unfortunately. The big calcium pills gave me fits too- but I found chewable Calcium Citrate online-they're made by Twinlab-and taste like grape sweet tarts-I have an unopened bottle you can try(I can take the tablets now) and would be glad to send them to you if you want to email your address to me. I couldn't even stand the smell of the protein powders for the first few weeks,,,,made me gag--. I ordered some Unjury unflavored and I was hooked--it's still the only one I drink. You can mix it with the Carb Countdown Chocolate milk (it's sweetened with splenda) and honestly you can't taste it at all). Are you a coffee or iced cappacino lover?--here's my recipe for a wonderful breakfast drink--1 heaping teaspoon of instant decaf coffee dissolved in 2 ounces boiling water--add 1/2 cup choc. Carb Count Down milk, 1/2 cup regular Carb Count Down milk, mix in a scoop of the unjury unflavored (I use a whisk to make it smooth), pour in a glass and add 3 or 4 ice cubes-you could even put it in the blender if you like-I found the blender added to much air and made me nauseated. I like flavored coffees so I add a little vanilla, or almond or coconut flavoring--whatever I'm in the mood for that day. (28 grams of protein, 170 calories, 5 grams of fat, and 3 grams of sugar). I prefer the protein mixed in something very cold, I can taste it in anything that's warm. I also ate alot of cottage cheese (you can add a little unsweetened pineapple juice or applesauce to give it more flavor) and oatmeal with milk and mashed banana-both are high in protein. At 2 weeks, I also couldn't eat or drink much at one sitting, so I would mix up the cottage cheese, eat a little of it, put it in the fridge and fini**** a couple hours later--felt like I was eating constantly but my nutritionist and doctor said to eat a tiny bit and eat often to keep from being nauseated--it worked for me. Sorry this is such a long post,,I hope some of this helps you- I really understand how you feel. Hang in there, it really does get better. Hugs--Wanda
