I am scheduled to have lap rny with you on Sept. 19. I currently take Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. I have a family history of stroke, my mother had a stroke at 47 and died of one at 52. To decrease any chance of problems, should I stop using the pill and and use condoms as our form of birth control untill after surgery? (I am 35)

It probably would be a good idea in your case, as you will also absorb less of you OCP's after a bypass also. I would stop it about a month before surgery and then maybe think about the patch after. C

I don't know if you have any children already but the Mirena IUD has worked great for me. I have had it almost a year and and happy with it. I know some people don't believe in IUDs but I have had no problems (knock on wood). I think they only will do them on women that have already had children though..

I have the same IUD. It is GREAT!!!! No periods, cramps, etc... This is my second IUD and I would not use anything else. I have severe migraines when I was about 20 years old. Along with the migraines came blind spots in my eyes and one arm would go numb. They thought I either had a blood clot in my brain or had a mini-stroke. Luckily neither seemed to be the case. The doctor immediately took me off the pill and said to NEVER go back on it. I have used the IUD every since and found it to be a great birth control method. I do know that your chance of infection increases with the IUD so you need to be in a monogomus relationship. I would really recommend talking to your doctor about it. Shellie
