does your hospital have a certain cut off weight for doing the laproscopic procedure? i was told i have to lose 35-40 pounds before they'll do it the lap way. i weight 361. and also is it true that men are at more risk for complications? thank you rich

We do not have a cut-off for laparoscopic procedures, all of my bypasses regardless of weight are done laparoscopically with my highest BMI being 85. Granted, if I got a patient with a BMI of 100 I might do them open. Having said that, no matter what your BMI is, the lower it is at the time of surgery the less your risk is, so pre-op weight loss is not a bad idea IMO.
