I was just told by my surgeon that I have a hernia behind my belly button. Didn't give me any restriction on what to do or not. I was told my by my exercise trainer that I should avoid exercise machines that would bunch up my abs unitl I had it repaired. Which really makes it hard to work out my abs to loose my belly. Now I don't know what to do to work that area out. Right now it is small and not causeing any problems so my surgeon is in no hurry to take it out. Told me that unless it got big and painful or gets intwined in my intestines that she won't do anything... Has anyone had problems with hernia's? And if so what am I to expect in the next few months while this thing is growing? It worries me cause I do alot of lifting and bending over on a daily basis.. The waiting and see what happens is driving me bonkers... Julia 281/220/??

I had a hernia repair done to my belly button area a few years back prior to wls....it never bothered me. It was found during my hysteromy. However, my husband (not a wls patient) has just had 2 hernia surgeries this summer. He too had a small tear at the belly button and the surgeon said the smaller the tear the more it will hurt. He is a UPS driver and with all the bending and lifting he was told to get it fixed ASAP. Now, since you are post op sugery I would wait...like the other lady mention it will help you get a TT with your surgery. Just follow instructions by your trainer...trust me when more weight keeps dropping off you will want that TT...!!! Good luck to you. Karie

Hi Julia, I have a history of hernias. I had one in my naval area that was repaired during my gallbladder surgery in 1985, which was 9 months after a c section. Then in Jan 05 during WLS my surgeon found three and was able to only repair two of them. Currently I have a small one in the upper part of my tummy. I workout but wear an elastic support garment to not cause myself any problems.
