Cleveland Clinic opening new bariatric wing
They will be only as good as the people running it!
I am at University Hospital and love the program! They entire staff is very supportive of the program......they all come..yes, even the doctors...to every pre-op and post-op meeting! They are very accessable!
I know lots of people that went through St. Vincent's and speak highly of it. They didn't accept my insurance so I went to UH!

Greetings!
The folks in Ohio are in for a real treat! Dr. Phillip Schaur was formerly the head of the department at University of Pittsburgh Weight Loss Center. He left the practice in December 2004 to head the Cleveland program. He started and grew the Pittsburgh practice. He has trained many wonderful surgeons at this "life-saving" procedure. Dr. Schaur is very gentle and very approachable, not to mention his level of knowledge and committment to his patients. In Pittsburgh he did attend every support group...I imagine he will do the same in Cleveland. He also trains surgeons around the country in the procedure...thus he is on the road quite a bit too. His travel and involvement sometimes makes it tough to get in to see him, but when you do it is well worth it. Good Luck and congratulation to the Ohio WLS folks!
All the Best...
CC is the best of the best in so many areas, but their bariatric program DESPERATELY needed an overhaul. I hope this is it for them. They were the first hospital I called when I finally decided to have the surgery, I was told there would be a YEAR wait or more to have it done. I called on Jan 2nd of 2004 and was told that I couldn't even get in for my initial consult until MAY. Contrast that to St. Vincents where I had everything done, including my SURGERY by May 11th.
It doesn't surprise me that CC is finally jumping on the WLS money train, Akron General just did the same thing.

I am 3 weeks post op from St Vincents. I researched and selected my surgeon first and then went wherever he was. Dr. Schreiber is a pioneer in the field of bariatric surgery and I'm glad I was able to have him as my surgeon before he retires. (though I understand he will still be at SVCH doing plastic surgery for WLS patients)...Anyway, the CC is always advanced in everything they do. They are a top notch hospital. If their new head surgeon is as great as I read, then they will succeed. Now, SVCH is one of the TOP 5 Bariatric Hospitals in the entire US, and I'll bet one day that CC will be right up there with them.

Hello All!
I haven't posted on here in a while let alone update my profile since I have been down in the dumps waiting for insurance approval. I have been waiting four months for medicaid to approve me and hopefully I will be having my surgery at CC if it is approved!! Hopefully with the new Bariatric wing opening up the clinic will contact me soon with something to tell me even if it is they haven't heard from insurance yet. So pray for me guys that everything works out. CC was the last place I had called to see if they accepted medicaid that is why this just has to work out for me otherwise I will be stuck.
