Sugar Alcohol?
I am sure that when I do the nutrition classes I will learn this but can someone explain to me what are "sugar alcohols" and if they make you dump the same as "sugar?" I was looking at some protien things and many of them would have low or no sugars but have sugar alcohol. I am trying to find things I like in preparation of hopefully being approved (Now that I have made the decision that I want the surgery, I am really anxious for it to hurry up and it gives me something to do).
Thanks - Stacey
ohhhhh *shudder* Sugar alcohol is like the
to me!! It is a bigger molecule, and harder on your gut to digest than raw sugar. It makes me dump.... evil evil evil!
Plus, it really screws up diabetics. It says Sugar Free, but it isn't really. Sugar Alcohols are basically the same as sugar when you are watching carbs and sugars. It's just processed a little differently.
I can do more "raw" sugar in foods than sugar alcohols. I can do about 10 to 15 grams of sugar. If I go much over 5 grams of sugar alcohol I get ill. I even thought it was in my head for a long time. Until I ate something that I thought was made completely with Splenda. I got sick. Then I looked in the "Other" ingrediants...sure enough they those sneaky little bugars were.
This is basically how it effects me. I know a few of my friends have the same problem. It doesn't phase my hubby at all. It is one of those "things" you will have to find out on your own I am afraid.
You will find that something that doesn't agree with you causes no problems for someone else...nature of the beast I guess. It is good that you are getting all this information upfront though! It is better to be well educated ahead of time so you know what you can expect!
Good luck on your journey...
Good things come to those who wait.... be patient... you will get there!

Not a problem at all!
Forewarned is forearmed.
I believe in laying it out there like it is...be it good, bad or indifferent. People respect honesty. I have always been that way as a nurse too. I think it gives my patients a chance to deal with the situation the best way they know how.
So if there is anything else you want to know about, if I can help I surely will!
Hugs,
Val
