Question for Dr. Curry
Dr Curry,
I have quit smoking. I will be having open RNY surgery next month. I have been using the nicoret gum and have considered buying some patches. The gum has really helped me not to smoke. Will the nicotine affect my surgery? I know it is important to be 8 weeks smoke free, but is it becuase of the carbon dioxide or the nicotine or both. I just want to make sure I do everything I can for my surgery to be a success.
Thanks so much.
Lisa
Lisa,
The nicotine in and of itself is not the part we need for you to quit. It's the tar and other nasties that get into your lungs and increase your risk of pneumonia. I think what you are doing is fine, although they need to know at the hospital if you are using the patch or gum in case they test you.
Good luck,
