Banding
I researched the RNY procedure for at least two years and while I was in the process of preparing for the RNY, I chose Gastric Banding.
My choice was based on the possible side effects of the bypass. The one side effect that I did not want to chance was the 1% that may suffer from severe nausea. I couldn't handle the thought of even a little nausea.
I also have about 80 pounds to lose give or take. I took into consideration that I work out on an average of 5 to 6 days a week and have for the past 15 years. I also have good eating habits and no co-mobilities ( no high blood pressure, excellent cholestral, no diabetes, etc.)
I lead an active life and felt the band would be an excellent tool to assist my weight lost journey.
I had the surgery on 10/21/04 and was back to excercise and work within three days. I felt and still continue to feel great! I have lost 42 pounds, and allot of inches! Sometimes I think about if I had the bypass, I would probably be at my goal weight now, but I don't regret my decision at all.
Research and weigh the pros and cons. The decision is ultimately up to you and what you feel is best for you. Also talk to your doctor and express your concerns.
Keep in touch and Good Luck,
Sheila
Greg,
I think a band is a great option for someone in your BMI and age range. It isn't a magic bullet, though, you have to be a little more patient than you do with a bypass. You also probably have to be more active to achieve the same results than those who have bypass. The trade off is that it's much lower risk.
Good luck,
