Socializing After Surgery

I am scheduled to have my open RNY surgery this Friday and to get home on the 20th. I have a couple of family Christmas get togethers coming up; one on the 24th and another on the 25th. I was told that if I felt like it I could go, but that I will tire easy and may not feel like going. I am also very "germaphobic" and hate being sick. With all the sickness going around (colds, flu, strep throat and stomach bugs), I am afraid to go around anyone. I hate NOT to go to these functions, but I really don't want to get sick after having surgery (making me feel worse than I will already feel). What would you do?

Thats a thought one Paulette!! I know that after my surgery most of my friends came to see me, so I didnt have to go out at all!! Maybe you could just ask those that are healthy to stop by for a few minutes. Your energy level will not be great and you need to take care of yourself first!! There will always be next year when you can go and show off your new body!! Remember now is the time to take care of you first!!

Just my opinion, but wait to see how you feel. The hardest part is not being able to eat with the rest of the group. You will be just out and following your doctors orders. Maybe just liquids. It does feel like you are being left out. Just remember these feelings are temporary. It is important to be around friends and family. Give yourself a break and respond by saying that you will attend if you are able. Best wishes on your upcoming surgery.

I would concur, play it by ear my friend. You may feel absolutely horrid, or wonderful. Just don't feel guilty for deciding not to go. Gotta take care of #1 and they will just have to understand. Those first few functions post op are kinda tricky, so you might as well feel up to handling it, instead of being exhausted, then you get frustrated, crabby, etc... My bet is riding on you just staying home and recouperating. That's what I would recommend anyway! Take care, good luck!! Valerie

Paulette, This is major surgery so you are going to feel tired and sore, of course. On the other hand, people do seem to make a quicker recovery ... Had my surgery Monday, this is Wednesday, and I think after I got dressed up to go out, I would be a little tired. You may feel up to making an appearance, but I can't imagine spending a long evening at a party, even if it's family. Just see how it goes, and make sure people know you may not make a long evening of it! Best of luck to you with your surgery! Kitty B.
