The Wish Center is only 5 minutes away from me. There are several good reviews of them. They do Lap Bands which is what I want... And they handle everything from the psych evals to post surgery support groups. The problem is that they use the hospital that I just quit a year ago. I worked there for 30 years and knew everyone. There's no way that the news of me getting wls surgery would remain a secret and I don't want a bunch of people coming to my room to tell me that I made a mistake. Trust me..they would. Do you think that I'm overreacting? Would you travel 40-50 miles for surgery to avoid gossip? cathy

Cathy, it all depends on your own peace of mind. I personally feel you will rest better and recover easier if you aren't on pins and needles waiting for someone you used to work with to drop in unexpectedly, especially if they are going to be negative. There are several surgeons with excellent reviews in the Cincinnati area (Dr. Curry for one) who do the lap band procedure. Cincy isn't that far from Springboro, maybe 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. Whichever avenue you choose, do it for yourself and feel good about your decision. Nobody can bring you down but yourself. Good luck! Lani

Hello Cathy, I live in Franklin and had my WLS at Kettering. There are also several good doctors at Kettering. Dr. Maquire, Dr.Hadley, and Dr.Anderson. The don't do LAP Band, but they do Open and LAP RNY, or Biliopancreatic diversion (BPD)/Duodenal switch. Here's there web site just put the www. in front newlifesurgery.org/. You can also read about them here at obesithhelp, http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/forums/?ID=TR-k134 It all just depends on where you are going to be the most comfotrable. If you really don't want to go to Middletown Hospital you will have to get a new doctor. I think you should be able to find a good doctor that you like at Kettering, Miami Valley, Grandview, or the old St.E's center that Dr.Fallang runs. Just keep searching until you find the one that is right for you. Good Luck, Robin W Dr.Hadley 11/17/03 218/115 28/4-6

Cathy, you may want to give Dr. Curry's office a call. Normally you can get in fast and unless your insurance has psyc evaluation requires he probably doesn't. He has a great staff and you only stay for 23 hours with the lap band. I know what you mean about avoiding people. I graduated with a guy who is a male nurse and me and a friend has made our families promise that if we get sick or any happens that they would not take us to the local hospital, because we don't want him taking care of us. We both really like him, but we don't want him seeing us in a compromising situation! Good luck on your journey. Debra

I have an appointment for one of Dr. Maguire's info sessions, but I have decided that my first choice is a Lap Band. I didn't realize that Dr. Carey's office did Lap Bands, I'll have to look into them. Dr. Curry is on the top of my list at the moment. I'll just have to take a drive down and see how far it really is. I don't even know where Deaconess is. Dr. C, I really think that it's great that you take the time to monitor these forums. I know how busy you must be. I'm sure you've learned a lot for here about the fears and difficulties of patients undergoing wls surgery. PLEASE don't change. After working in healthcare for 30 years it's very refreshing to see the focus being put back onto the patient.

Thanks, Cathy. Deaconess is on "pill hill" right near U.C. Take the Hopple street exit off 75, turn left, go up to the top of the hill, and turn right on Clifton. It's just a bit north of downtown. Dr. C

Cathy, Although I've never worked in a hospital, my aunt was a nurse at one of the two hospitals in town as well as director of the school of nursing. Whenever a member of our family, including that of my father's (who is only related by marriage) went into the hospital, their business was an "open book". I recall when my father had minor surgery-didn't even tell the aunt he was going in and after his release she called to see "how he was". I made my mind up then and there that unless I was on death's door, I would walk through fire to have any surgery or whatever done no where NEAR that hospital. I won't even go there to have blood drawn! I traveled 2 hours to Dr. Curry and don't regret one minute of those trips prior to surgery and am looking forward to those upcoming now that I'm a post-op. Go where you will feel comfortable.....anonymous is the best way to go! Beth

Cathy, I don't blame you....when I had my surgery I did not tell anyone! Only my husband knew...I did not want ANY unwanted opinions. You need to go where you will feel relaxed and not worried about things. Karie -116 12/12/03

You've guys have helped me make up my mind. I know what I'm going to do. Cinci is just a drive down I-75 and I'm a big girl now (no pun intended ;). If there are no physical contradictions and Anthem wants to quit having to pay for my blood pressure and asthma meds then hopefully next year in Hilton Head I'll be able to find a pair of shorts that fit. Thanks Cathy
