Had My Consult Today And Have Some Questions/Concerns

I had my consultation today at the Barix Clinic. Everything went well and I was quite impressed with the facility. They want me to go (on my own) and have a pyschological evaluation and a sleep study done. I have United Health Care insurance and my understanding is I have to go through United Behavior Systems for my insurance to cover my seeing a pyschologist (I really don't have the money to pay out of pocket right now). There is no close sleep clinic, so I would have to go to a city to have the sleep study done. I have an appointment with the Wish Center this coming Monday. Should I go to it just to get a second opinion (and maybe they could change my mind into having them do my surgery)? Plus they do their own pysch evaluation, so no running around trying to find a psychologist that my insurance covers. The Wish Center or the Barix Clinic is about the same distance from where I live. Also, the Barix Clinic wants me to attend Barix support group meetings but none are close to me. Does the Wish Center require to same or can you attend any gastric by pass surgery support group (there are a few in my general area)? I want to do this, I really do and I want to be a sucsess at it, but my busy lifestyle doesn't allow me to travel 50 miles one way to attend a support group meeting or run all over Ohio trying to get evaluations done. Insight and comments needed PLEASE!!!!!

Paulettea, I think, as long as you can afford the time and/or money, the more places you look, the better. When you hit the right place, you'll feel it "click." I have a lot of patients who have been other places and said it just didn't feel right, and I'm sure I've had patients who've gone elsewhere after they've seen me and done the same. This is a big decision, you don't want to just jump in head first! Good luck, Dr. C The Deaconess Surgical Weight Loss Center Cincinnati, Ohio (513) 559-2545

I believe that the more information you can gather the better. Have the test and study done too. UHC should pay for it. Don't rush into something without all of the needed information. Good luck on your journey. Deb

I have uhc ppo and am having surgery the 10th of Nov at the Barix. I had no problem at all finding a phys evaulation facility. You may want to call uhc and ask again, also the Barix gave me a number of a sleep study facility to call. The sleep study is the most time consuming, so I would try to get ahold of someone asap on that. I'm sure you will find the right facility for you, just go with your first impression, that's usually the right thing. Good luck to you on your journey.

HI! I would say gather as much information as you can from as many places as you can! I am a Research Nurse and that is what I do best! I research things to death. But, I know all my options that are available before I do anything. I agree with Dr. Curry too. You can gather up tons of information, but nothing is like that good 'ol gut feeling. When something is right you just know by the way it feels. There are a great deal of options available. What about area hospitals? I am ignorant with geography, but how near to a major city are you? This is a great place for resources and information. I would say definately go to the other place for your meeting. You certainly aren't committed to any one place yet...so check them all out! Take care. Good luck in your journey and please come back here and ask as many questions as you need to, there is a wealth of information and support here! Hi Pauletta~~ My husband just had a sleep study done at our local hospital and our insurance paid for it. We have a UHC PPO. I don't live too far from you and I know that Adena Health Systems performs sleep study tests!! Hope this helps!! Jennifer

Hi Paulette, I am from New Vienna, I went to Columbus for my sleep Apena, however Adena in Chillicothe does this and I think Wilmington hospital hosp is starting it. There is also a psyc in Wilmington that you can go to. I started out at Barix Clinic, then looked at Osu, But after alot of consideration I went to Deaconess Hospital and absolutely loved Dr Trace Curry and his gang. They treated me so good, and made me feel so at ease. I know that I have picked the best person for me. They got me in quick and accepted all my paperwork of things that I had already had done. Good luck on your Journey, Also, there is a support group meeting in Hillsboro at the New YMCA called OWLS it is a group of ladies that have and havent had the surgery. I have mine on Nov 12 and I attend this meeting It is very informative. It is the 2nd Monday of the month at 6 p.m. Feel free to come. Jackie C

Just a little bit of info about the Wish Center. They do do all the testing right at the faculity but they also have a manditory 2yr support system that they charge $1,800. for and you have to pay it mostly up front. So before you waste your time going ther make sure that you find out all the costs. The insurances do not cover the 1800. support system. I checked out OSU, Mt Carmel and the Wish Center, I could have gotten to the wish center but could justify a manditory $1800. fee for such a thing. I saw Dr Curry and was impressed with the whole staff and Dr C. Check out all your options, after all you need to have complete confidence in your surgeon and staff. Shelia
