Support question and just wondering
I'm to the point that I can eat soft to normal food. My mother always likes to go out and eat and we did tonight. Is there a card I can get to explain that I'm only able to eat so much and to be order small - child portions without being asked so many questions? I have a card for medical emergency about the gastro bypass, but going out to dinner and ask for a child portion always brings up questions, WHY? Or even you are too old, so what about a senior portion, then I'm told I'm to young. So get charge and loose ur appetite with regular size portion. What a waste.
Need advice, but do not want to deal with explaining my situation
Thank you for Ur time
Dan O
Hi Daniel,
I haven't had surgery yet but just wanted to chime in on what I have heard. I remember this being discussed on the main board many months back. Some did obtain a card from their surgeon that they had used while eating out. I distinctly remember that it was a hot topic because people were mad when they couldn't use them at certain places & others felt as though this shouldn't be an issue or a reson to stop eating at a particular place......
Not sure if this helps ya out at all but maybe there is something in the library portion.
Good luck to ya!
Jen

Daniel,
My OSU support group gave me one. However, I usually pay full price. It seems to be easier than convincing a restaurant to order off the childrens menu. Plus, there is usually nothing good on the childrens menu. I have gotten used to taking home leftovers. I ask for a box with my food and place half in a container to take home. Then I have lunch for the next day. Cheryl
Daniel,
It does get frustrating sometimes, doesn't it? I do have a card that I printed out from this site but I never use it.
I found that if I ask for something from the children's menu and they refuse, I just order soup and an appetizer or I order soup and ask the friend or family member I'm dining with if they would mind giving me and ounce or two of their meat, fish or chicken.
I've stopped eating in any kind of buffet restaurant - it's just a waste of money to pay for what you won't eat and you can't carry out.
Most restaurant portions are huge these days and I find that most people are happy to give up some of their entree. If neither of those are options, I ask fthe waitress to bring a "to go" box out with my meal - put 1/2 in it and eat it the next day.

Dan, I have a card and never used it and I am almost 2 years out. My husband has had surgery, too, so that does make it easier for us. We usually split an entree. Bob Evans restaurants always have let us order from the senior menu, even though we aren't old enough. You can ask for lunch portions at other restaurants. (I still can't finish that much, but I can take it home.) I don't like the kid's menus - nothing there is worth eating.
I don't push the issue, since I have chosen have WLS, and chosen to go to a restaurant, and I was never charged a greater amount for eating more! Restaurants are in the business to make money, not cater to my specific needs, and I can choose not to go to certain restaurants (like buffets), since I know I can't eat my money's worth any more.
If you do feel the need to explain the reason for smaller than normal portions, I have found that most people are really interested and will do what they can to help.(within reason) . In fact, at one restaurant, I wound up giving my phone number to a server whose mom was interested in surgery but didn't know where to start. (Very nice lady, by the way!)
