vacation plans for 2 weeks after surgery
I am hoping to have my surgery on October 6. We are going on vacation on the 24th. Am I going to feel like going? It is a 10 hour drive. It will be laid back once we get there, and we well only be there for 3 days. We are going with his family, who by the way I am not telling about the surgery. Well I be able to eat anything if we eat out? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
No,you will not even begin to feel like going on this trip. You really will not be able to eat anything except pureed foods. Bad idea. I would cancel the surgery until you get back. You could really hurt yourself. Sorry, I am 8 weeks out and I could have never done even 3 hrs. in a car . Be smart about this, its a very big surgery. Are you having lap or open,Cindy
Hi,
What type of WLS are you having?? I had the lap band done and I would say that I felt good enough to go away. My only concern would be that you would need to stop and walk often... you sure don't want to end up with blood clots !! As far as eating... with the lapband, you would be able to do like soups.. broth...maybe cottage cheese... apple sauce.. jello ... pudding... that type of stuff. Now. if you are having the other type of WLS... I don't know what to tell you, but from what i've read about others that have had it... you'd be better off NOT going. Just my 2 cents worth Cindy (i live in Holland.... where are you having surgery??)
Hi Melinda,
I totally agree with Cindy. And Jane has a good point, too, about the blood clots. Have you talked to your surgeon? I would think s/he would strongly discourage such a long drive, especially twice in five days. At two weeks post op, I still had some discomfort in a car just on quick trips to doctor/grocery. Also, I've found since my surgery my rear end gets tired and ouchy after sitting on it for more than about a half hour. The number one rule the doctor gave me when I left the hospital was the requirement to get up and move around frequently to prevent blood clots -- with a 10 hour drive you would not be able to do this and it could seriously compromise your health and healing.
Two weeks post surgery your eating will not be anything near "normal" -- it will be essential that you eat on a schedule, you will probably be eating 6 small meals a day (or three meals and three snacks) and you will be eating them very, very slowly. Your focus will be getting enough protein and fluids. Depending on your surgeon, you may still be on liquids or pureed foods. Pureed foods would be impossible to do while traveling.
Two weeks post op your focus should still be entirely on your eating and your health. If you're committed to the vacation then I'd re-schedule the surgery.
Good luck!

Hi Melinda:
I had my lap rny one week ago. And I've been out everywhere. I'm even able to drive becasue I don't need the pain meds anymore. The most important thing will be to stop every hour or so and walk to prevent the blood clots. But as far as feeling well enough you should be fine. As far as eating out, you'll be on a pureed diet. So like others said, it will have to be soups, cottage cheese etc. Just make sure you take protein shakes, meal replacements, yogurt and things that you will be able to have to make sure you get your calories and protein.
