The risk of death from RNY ranges from 0.1% to 2% depending on several factors. If you are having a lap procedure, your BMI is 40, and you have no medical problems, it's probably 0.1%. If your BMI is 80 and you're having an open then 2%.
Sandy is right, though, if you meet the NIH criteria for weight loss surgery then the risk of your obesity is higher than the risk of the operation.

your friend is full of hoey I mean that in a kind way. People get the stats all wrong all the time. I have heard 1 in 5 people who have the surgery die if you count deaths within a year. I pretty much chalk it up to stats being created by the same people that tell you Atkins will make your kidneys explode- Well meaning but completely misinformed All of the reviews about the surgery I have read say 1-2 % Considering a LOT of people having the surgery are also in thier 40's and 50's and have already had years of health complications it isnt surprizing. A lot of people who have this surgery are already pretty sick.
But not 1 in 20
