I've been silent participant for over 6 weeks but today I need to vent. After passing my psyhc eval, passed medical eval and passed pcp eval so the surgeon can tell I'm not a canidate. I've been researching surgery for over a year and when I finally do take the first step, I was told ' I don't know what I'm getting into', 'try something else and come back and see me in 6 months', 'Your just fat, your not unhealthy'. I've left a call for the folks @ Deaconess (at Dr. Curry ) to see if they will take me in as a patient. I'm so disappointed, I'd been waiting for this for so long and wanted it soooo bad. I'm 39, 225lb and 5'2".BMI 41.6. I've been over 200lbs for well over 10yrs and I wanted this so bad..... Place heavy sigh here. :' ( Any words of encouragement would be appreciated. Any tips for 'what next' would be helpfull too.

I don't understand why the surgeon let you go so far ahead if he/she wasn't going to do you? That doesn't seem right to me. I don't know what you can do but I will pray that you find another decent surgeon who will help you on your way. Good luck and keep us posted please! Doreen

Dr. Curry's office will take care of you. I say call them and wait for great things... the doctor obviously was not goog enough anyway. Dr. Curry is amazing. Hang in there, my thoughts are with you, I was denied this week as well... for insurance reasons. Heather

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Some of the pain of the dissapoinment is fading. I guess they are just like any other business. . . I put out over $250 for the evals just be told. . . you can't have it done. I've read the posts about Dr. Curry but this time I'll find out if he will do the surgery first before I shell out $$ for more evals. On the bright side. . . Dr Fegelman @ Jewish Hosp only does open RNY, Dr. Curry does them Lap. Worse case senario, I'll go to Mexico or Europe and have done and for a lot less than the US. Keep me in your prayers. Please . . .

Valerie, Hang in there. I know how you feel. I went through all the presurgical testing which resulted in a heart cath due to a false fail on a stress test only to be told by the surgeon's insurance department that I'd never get approval (my husband's employer has an exclusion which is difficult to complete). After speaking with the human resources department at my husband's employer and the insurance company, both told me to submit, be denied then appeal as only that way could I fight it with my health being the issue. But, no WAY were the insurance department people going to submit. It was a never ending viscious cycle of NO'S! I contacted Dr. Curry and I couldn't be happier. He is wonderful and has an awesome staff. They submitted my paperwork, just this week, as a matter of fact AND he's required no testing on my part. You won't be sorry going to Dr. Curry. Hang in there.... Beth

Do you have any health problems other than being over wieght? Like arthritus, daibeties, heart problem, back trouble. If you do not have any what they call co-morbitities most doctor won't touch you. If over the past few years you have seen the doctor for depression, back pain, heart troubles or anything get that, that is wha tthey are looking for. The Doctor should have told you why he wouldn't do it that would have helped out alot so you knew which step to take next. I am sorry. Don't give up. I tried for 2 years got turned down by my insurance then this year with in 2 weeks I was approved so there is hope you may just have to look a bit harder to get it done. Good luck Rynae

Rynae, The only comorbidity I have is depression and I have 1 1/2 yrs of phsyc bills to prove it. The doc at Jewish even asked if my counselor knew what I was doing. I told him I tried to eat healthy, 1500/day, to which I was told 1200 was the extreme. But a physical trainer at Mercy said since I work out I need to eat more to keep the metabolism up. I don't overeat, binge, drink. I just can't lose weight. I'm at the gym 3 x a week and try and walk at night. ugh! I can only hope and pray Dr. Curry will do the surgery.

There was an old Senate bill 41 that was to help or aloud coverage bu inssurannce for obesite individuals with a BMI over 40. Unfortually it never past. Myself and others has written to Senator Hagan's Office to bring that bill back to life. I am hoping and believed that Dr. Curry will be able to help you. It is all about oney andwe are just a number, with these insurance companies. Your health will or can decline from obesitey I know for a fact. Hang in there and fight for the obesite & Morbibe Obesite people rights for proper coverage. This is not cosmetic or a life style choice, it is an illness mental & physically. Take care and go for ur goal Daniel
