Smoking
I have asthma, three forms of sleep apnea, pernicious anemia, three children, and a wonderful husband.
I figured that was enough on my lungs....lol
My surgeon explained to me that the major complication of the WLS surgery (even leading to death) is weak lungs going in to pneumonia.
I have a past history of pneumonia, and bronchitis.
So I took a long look bought another pack of ciggs. did not think I could quit.........soul searched.........prayed really hard......and then said you know what I am about to change my whole way of life.....I will forever be giving up pigging out..........I have three beautiful children and a loving husband who need me.........I think my families happiness and well being is far more important to me than ciggs.......besides if I can give up my greatest passion for the rest of my life I can give up ciggs for atleast the 6-7 weeks before surgery........at which time if I want I can start back up but I do not think I will.......I am also trying to get my hubby to stop.......he smokes outside and will not let anyone smoke in the house......he wants to make sure my lungs are clean......love him so much......just hang in there....sending prayers your way and sending prayers of strenth to you and your friend.......god bless
Hi Pattie....There is a swab test also that can be done prior to surgery. It is usually done on the day of surgery, and if any nicotine is detected they will cancel her right on the spot!! I work at a bariatric hospital and have seen it done so many times...I hope she quits at least 4 weeks before sx. Let her know it will help her healing and she won't have to worry about getting any respiratory infections right after surgery, I've seen that happen, too! Take Care
