My husband and I have decided to have the RNY surgery. Now it's a question of which surgeon to choose. We have anthem insurance and they cover: Dr. Derrick Martin, Dr. Alison Clarey/Dr. Bruce, and Dr. Maguire/Dr.Hadley. Please respond to this and let us know why you chose the surgeon you chose and what you've heard about the other surgeons. Since we have the choice, we want to make the best decision possible. So far, we've heard a few bad things about both Dr. Martin and Dr. Maguire's group. The big advantage to Dr. Martin is that he is the only surgeon that's covered in the Dayton area that does the RNY laparoscopically.

Hello, After researching all of the above doctors I chose Drs. Maguire and Hadley with Dr.Hadley doing my open RNY 11/17/03. I know a few people who have gone to Clarey/Bruce some liked them others did not. They are DO's if that makes any difference. I read several profiles from Dr.Martin and several had a very bad time one lady's LAP lasted 6 hours!!!!!!!! But again there are others that have done well with him also. Whoever YOU chose YOU have to feel very comformable with them. Feel free to email me if you want to know more about Drs Maguire and Hadley. Good Luck, Robin W

Jennifer, I chose Dr.Bruce/Clarey because I know a couple people who have done their surgery and they came highly recommended. I also liked the fact that they do the surgery together as a team. They have been doing this for many years. The only thing is they do not do it laproscopic. They choose to do open because of less complications. They have a web site you can go to it is www.weightlossalternatives.com. My surgery is scheduled for March. They do surgery out of Grandview, Southview and Kettering Hospital. On the other hand, I have also heard good things about Dr. Maguire and Dr. Martin. I do not know how long Dr. Martin has been doing this and for some reason I think it has not been very long. That was one of the things I looked for. And I heard that if you go to Dr. Maguire's group to only have him and no one elso in the group. I am not sure why. But, I heard it takes a long time to even get in with him because of the waiting list. So.... I hope this helps. I think whom ever you choose will be fine. Just make sure you are comfortable with that doctor and go by what you think not everyone else. Everyone has their own opinion. If you have any questions regarding Dr. Bruce/Clarey let me know. Good luck, Alison

I had open RNY on May 13, 2002 with Dr. Maguire and Dr. Hadley assisted. I don't think you will find more caring doctor's than Dr. M and Dr. H. Dr. M is very quiet and is not a chit chat sort of person, but he is so very caring with all of his patients. He comes in at all hours of the night to check on lab reports or tests if a patient is having troubles. Several people in our support group have had Dr. H and again I hear nothing but praise about her. I met Dr. M when he performed my mother's hernia operation several years ago and I like him very much as a surgeon. I do know that there is somewhat of a wait to get into Dr. M and Dr. H but my opinion is that it would be worth the wait. I do know someone that had Dr. Bruce and she did not lose as much weight as she wanted and has gone back due to her stoma stretching.

I had open RNY by Dr. Martin. I had hoped for a lap but ended up with open( I knew ahead of time) and was glad. I feel like they can see what is going on, better. (My PCP had said Dr.Maguire and I have heard he is the best in the area. There is a long wait but worth it.) I am glad I went with Dr. Martin. No tubes, no foley, and no stitches. Just glue. I go back thurs. for my 3 month check up. I am down 49 lbs. I had mine at MVH and they have a great staff there, too! If I were you....I'd go to all the info sessions and see who you like the best. I know people who have had Cleary and have had trouble. I think you will hear good and bad about all the docs! Best of luck to you!

Hi Jennifer, I know a lot of people from the Xenia area who had their surgery done with Dr. Fallang. He was in Middletown but has since moved to Dayton and is located in the old St. Elizabeth hospital. I have been to Dr. Maguires AND Dr. Clareys informational meetings. I know SEVERAL people that had their surgeries performed by both. All surgeons (Maguire, Clarey, Bruce) have several years under their belt. Dr Hadley (Dr. Maguires protege') has not been doing the surgeries AS long, but being a protege' of one of the best, I hear from her patients that she is just as good. Also you can get in faster.Bottom line, I chose Dr. Maguire/Dr. Hadley's team. I feel they take more precautions. Downfall: You go home with drainage tubes and stitches for 2 weeks. The plus of this is, I have heard SOME stories of peoples incision (small section) coming back open because it is infected because it needs to drain. So I believe having the drainage tube helps. Dr. Maguire was doing this in the early 70's and has held prestige positions in the medical community. I have really done my homework for the last few months, and I comfortable with the choice I have made. I wish you the best in whomever YOU and YOUR HUSBAND chose.

Jennifer, Hi! My name is Dorothy and I had an open RNY almost 2 years ago. I went to Dr. Fallang. Like one of the other postings said, he used to be in Middletown, now he's in Dayton. I had a great experience with him and his staff. I went from 398lbs to 220lbs, with a total loss of 178lbs. I have not had any bad side effects, no vomiting, nothing. I am really lucky, and I feel totally blessed. Dr. Fallang was really great at answering any questions, and his staff made me feel totally comfortable. Hope this helps!!! If you wanna e-mail me, my address is [email protected] Open RYN 03/18/02 398/220/175??
