I ahve been suffering from iron deficiency anemia for about a year now. it started with bleeding ulcers Last October. They healed and then I started having problems with blood clots. Nothing to do with the surgery. They put me on Coumidian and then I sprouted two bleeding ulcers, ended up in the hospital and almost didn't make it. Now they are having a serious problem trying to get my blood count back up to any where near normal. Seems like I can't absorb iron very well. has anyone got any ideas or help concerning this problem. In addition, I have two doctors who swear that I am still bleeding from the stomach that i don't use. Has anyone heard of this

Hi, Jean! Check out www.vitalady.com .Michelle Curran had WLS years ago and had some real problems with lack of vitamins and minerals, so she educated herself on what products work for RNY patients. She sells a carbonyl iron that we can supposedly absorb better. My husband I both had RNY, and we are both a little anemic - him moreso than me, as he had problems with some bleeding a month after surgery. I was feeling kind of a nagging tiredness, coupled with knowledge of my last labs, and decided to up the iron I am taking. I can't remember the brand (Nature Plus, I think) but I get it at a Health food store and it is chelated iron in a chewable tablet that I can tolerate very well. I upped it to 2 tablets a day about a week ago and I am feeling more energetic, so I think my count is coming up a little bit. I also take B12 sublingual every other day. (I was taking it every day and my level came back >2000, so I backed off a little!). I guess it is possible that you could be bleeding in the unused stomach. I don't know what they could do to stop it, and I don't know how they might determine for sure that that is where the bleeding is coming from. (As opposed to, say, a diverticulum high in the small intestine.) I would stay away from ferrous sulfate, though. That stuff is rough on a regular stomach! Sunds like you have had a rough road since October. Take care.....Sue
