Hello everyone, been lurking on OH for a while.  I've decided on the VSG and I live in Columbus OH.  Dr Stephen Myers at the Fresh Start Bariatrics does the VSG's now but I'm concerned that he hasn't done a lot of them.  IF anyone has had the VSG with Dr Myers, I would love to hear about your experience.
thanks!

Welcome!

I dont know about Dr Myers, but I do live in columbus and I was sleeved 2/16.

Wow, sleeved 2-16-10.  Congratulations.  How are you doing with the recovery?  What made you choose your doctor over Dr Myers?  Just curious.  Please give details of your surgery!
thanks.

Basically insurance steered me to Dr Schumacher. He also does 400 surgeries a year. I also like him because he speaks to me like a person and not a dull child.

Other than the gas. burping and lower gi cramping, I feel great and actually ok to drive. I actually went to sams club and target today and walked around for a few hours. I am going to do that again tomorrow... it felt great to get out.

I was up the day of surgery, twice that night, and each time I had to summons the STNA/nurse just incase. I think this was easy, no complaints, no complications.

I just got my date with him for March 10 for a sleeve. He has been doing bariatric surgery for many years, and I feel completely comfortable having him perform my surgery.
My pre-op is on Thursday!!!

that's awesome!  I can't wait for mine.
I wonder if you know the answers to these questions in your process in talking with them.
Does Dr myers do a leak test after surgery?
Does Dr Myers use glue or fabric mesh or sewing over the staple line?  I was reviewing surgical techniques of other drs and they use a combination of these methods. I was wondering what Dr Myers methods were.
That's fantastic you are on your way!

He does a combination, yes to the leak test.
If you haven't gone to his information session, I highly recommend you do so. It is required as a first step anyway but you are in no way required to sign up for surgery.
All evaluation is done in one day at his office. He has a full time staff including dietitian, psych, etc. They handle insurance paperwork too.
As part of the program, you have 3 months membership at the workout facility on the site, along with a personal trainer.
Go to his website and sign up.
Not sure why you think he isn't experienced, he has been a gastric surgeon for 30 years.
Surgery is at Riverside and rooms are on a dedicated bariatric floor with bariatric furniture.

Greetings, Dr. Myers was my surgeon for the VSG on September 16, 2008 - I couldn't be happier with my results, but more importantly with the very personalized care that I received from him.  The medical staff at Ohio Health seem to have a high opinion of him, also.  Before I made my choice, I spoke to a patient who was his second VSG patient - I was probably about his 20 - 25th patient.  I by one year post surgery, I had lost about 110 pounds and have continued to lose (although slowly!).

Something to consider when debating whether he has done enough of these particular surgeries - he has been a general surgeon for over 25 years and the Fresh Start Program was his program - Ohio Health invited him to join their team - which I think is pretty high praise.

If you would like to PM me, I would be very happy to speak to you about my experience - I could not be more pleased with my experience and results.

I am even more impressed after my pre-op visit. He has a one on one with you, does an exam, asks questions, makes eye contact and is a warm and caring person.
He even gives his patients his cell phone number and you are welcome to call any time you feel you need to.
One thing that impressed me is he wants me in extra early for a couple of bags of platelets since mine are a bit low.  He said they are probably ok, but probably isn't good enough for him, he wants ok no questions.
I have full confidence in him and his staff. You just know they are behind you 100%.

I was sleeved by him in January.  He is an excellent surgeon.  There are other things I am not thrilled about with his practice, but as for expertise-he has it.
