Pre surgery diet - What did you have to do and for how long??

I have heard mixed things.  Most people that I've spoken with that have had their surgery at a 'regular' hospital did not have to go on a special liquid diet prior to surgery.  Most of those having surgery at Bariatric Hospitals do.

I'm curious - did you have to go on a special diet prior to surgery? If so, how long and what type of diet?  Where did you have your procedure at?  Were you able to make it, or did you cheat?

Please help!!!

All I was required was to have a normal breakfast day before surgery, then a light lunch, bowel prep at 1:00 and nothing but liquid there after. Then nothing after midnight.

Make your last meals good ones. I know I am wishing I had eaten some more things about now!

I am going to a Bariatric hospital and they require a 3-day liquid diet. UGH...i am now on DAY 2...2 DAYS OF LIQUID DIET...I am HUNGRY! Really hungry!  Any suggestions on a liquid that I can have to feel fuller?

I certainly don't want to look back and see my last meal as - 'chicken broth'!!

I only had to do 2 weeks of a low-sugar, low fat diet and then all-liquid for 24 hours before surgery.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

Really???  Wow.  So I wonder if this 'liquid thing' is truly for a good reason.  i don't want to rationalize nor do I want to cheat, but I am probably getting no more than 500 calories per day....doesnt seem right????

Usually the reason the surgeons who do require the pre-op liquid diet is to shrink your liver (which can get in the way during lap procedures).  My surgery was open (and was expected to be open from the very beginning), so I don;t know if taht matters (or if my surgeon simply doesn;t require the liquid diet).

Stay on the full liquid diet.  Remember that you can have lots of different kinds of protein shakes. The diet will shrink the size of your liver and that will be very beneficial for you.  Also, the full liquid diet is what you will be on after surgery for three weeks, so you need to get practice on how that diet works now.

I had my surgery at Barix on 6/30, and you will find that Barix really knows what they are doing.  The care I received there was awesome, and I have been having a smooth recovery since. This Tuesday I go on pureed foods!!

Kev,

You rock!  That was really the encouragement I needed.  You're absolutely right....might as well get used to the full liquid now....

I'm glad you're doing well.  You're nearly a month out.  Since you went to Barix and even had Dr. Custer, do you mind if I ask you a few last minute questions??

Thanks again for the encouragement....

And coongratulations on your transition to the losers side.

I had to go on a 10 day liquid diet.  The first 8 days I would have 2 protein shakes and a lite dinner.  The last 2 days was only clear liquids.  It was hard but I made it.  It will help shrink your liver.  I had no problems with my RNY, I only had problems with my breathing; but that is because I have asthma.

Good Luck, you will do great.  Keep in touch.

I had a two week liquid diet before surgery.  The day before I had a bowel prep and then only clear liquids.  Nothing after midnight the night before.

Had my surgery on July 14th and still on a liquid diet.

Hang in there, you really don't get too hungry the longer you are on it.  I promise
