does anyone have united health care ins.

Hi, I'm new here and from Ohio my doctor and I discused having weight loss surgery and both of us thought it was a great idea! United Health Care does not think so they said they do not cover anything that has to do with weight loss! What do I do? Where do I start?Please help I'm scared I am going to miss my child growing up!

Every policy is different. It might help to start with your employer they are the ones who make up what is and what IS NOT in the policies.  If they can not change the policy then see if there is any one else you can go with when it is open enrollment time, or you could start looking around for self pay.   Most docs and hospitals charge less when you self pay because you pay everything up front.  If your credit is ok there there are medical charge acounts where you can pay monthly, again most docs have this info.

I have united health care and the only thing I needed to do to comply for surgery was 6 months medically supervised weight loss. When my surgeons office submitted the proof to them, they approved it withen 3 days.

I have just started the process and have united HC.  I was told approval would be easy as long as I had documented 5 yr of weight history.  Where are you going for surgery?

I have UHC too and had the same requirements. Also the same surgeon you are starting your journey with. They are an awesome team and treat you like gold, even in the hospital. Just do what your told and things will work out. Good luck!

My united health care policy doesn't cover WLS either. I had to be secondary insurance through my husband's job - Cigna and they covered it.  It really just depends on how the policy is written.

If you can afford it, you could look into financing it.

I spoke to UHC today to verify my coverage and at first she told me I did not have any coverage,  then she said oh I'm sorry I was reading the wrong column.  Maybe call them again and talk to someone different.  I'm only cover if the doctor and hospital are in network.  Good luck!

Go to your employer.  UHC does cover wls (even the DS) when it's in their contract to do so, and they're a dream to work with.  It looks like your employer decided to exclude this.  It's the time of year that they are negotiating for next year's open enrollment, though, so if you want to get it in next year's program, don't waste another minute.

Everyone is correct regarding some policies cover it and other don't.  It simply lies in the fact of whether you employer decided to exclude weight loss surgery.  If it is listed under your employers certificate of coverage as a Plan exclusion, they will not even consider paying for it nor will they even talk about it.  I, too, am going to have to be added to my husband's insurance (Aetna) who will pay for it.
