OT: Should I move to Oberlin?

Hello Ohioans (?) ,

I just applied for a job at Oberlin College, and while I will probably not get it, I still like to think about the possibility to moving to Ohio.  (Omg I just realized - Ohio: OH, ObesityHelp: OH - does that drive you guys crazy? sorry!).  I was wondering if anyone could tell me about what it is like to live in the Oberlin area, or from Oberlin to Cleveland area.  Hopefully Ohio isn't an economic black-hole like Michigan. 
Comments about Oberlin College would be appreciated as well.  Thanks a ton, my hopefully future neighbors!

I would not advise anyone to move here, not to any city in this state, IMHO.

I love Ohio, but I don't think you should move here without having a job lined up.  Ohio is right behind Michigan in job losses.  On the plus side, you can certainly find inexpensive housing.

Oberlin is a nice small town with a great school.  Good luck on your job search!

Ohio is like most states, we're all struggling...........BUT once they give you the new job GO FOR IT.   You should start internet  looking at all the little towns in and around Cleveland for housing. I'm sure you can find some good deals out there even if you want to rent first.   It really all depends on WHO you ask if Ohio is a black hole or not. Those that work in the auto industery yes for others not so bad.   I work at a discount retailer and our sales are up (very small but up) since a lot of people still want to shop just not at the mall, they come to us to spend what money they can at our store instead.

Yup like everyone said Ohio is not in good shape for jobs. But I live In Elyria and its like 20 minutes from Oberlin.  Its a quaint little college town full of character and charm. Lots of Grand Old houses and a lovely downtown square. Good luck to you.

i lived in lorain county for over 30 years- look in elyria and south amherst -also wellington- all very close to oberlin--oberlin itself being a college town may have great rentals...however-i wouldn't just up and move here without a job in pocket!!!!  i really would not even consider going any farther east than elyria to live if working in oberlin....

great doctors..shopping isn't bad...gas running about 1.85 right now tho we got it tonite for 1.78

when you move to ohio you need to get your car checked over in weird ways- title office gets involved and lorain county has echecks (emissions) before you can get license plates....

where in mich are you??? economy sucks everywhere- at least we haven't had as much snow and uck as mich....

oh and yes --OH and OH --was confusing for me for a bit when they changed the name of the site to OH--i thought "how cool" --then it dawned on me!!!!

Hi I currently reside in Elyria about 20 mins away from Oberlin and just like everyone else, I think you should have something lined up before coming here. Not too much happening in Ohio these days. Oberlin is a small, quiet, quaint town so it's pretty nice there. Good Luck with whatever you decide!

I agree. i live in Cincinnati and its like any other city....

Oberlin is a picturesque town, with a large town square full of trees and walkways. It also has interesting shops and a wonderful atmosphere. If you are very conservative politically, you might not find yourself agreeing with some of the people you meet.  I graduated from the college and spent the happiest years of my life there. Love it. Lots of concerts at Finney Chapel, a great classical music school, summer fair.

 Ask the college what their census is,( is it up or down...what are their projected numbers)  I would hate for you to spend money to move for a new job if the job might get cut in a few months.  Many colleges are cutting back, I live in Cincinnati and my daughter in Bowling Green both Ohio.  In both places colleges have cut back due to the economy. I have scene it too often when someone moves only to lose their job a few months later, now they are under a lease or morgage and nolonger have a local family support system.  I have been unemployed for over a year.  I worked for a hospital who fired me after I suffered a major stroke.  I am still waiting on the ruling from the EEOC. The government is soooo slow.
