Protien Drink

Hi Everyone.

I want to try a protien drink before surgery and get everything together.  Can you suggest where to buy it and what kind.  I really don't know anything about them.  Also, how do you make it and how much do you drink?

I have my first consultation next week and I am looking forward to a date soon.  I have almost all of my records at the doctors office already.  PCP and Psyche and pulmonologist.

Any help would be appreciated, I might try the liquid diet a week before surgery.  IF he doesn't suggest it already.

Thanks,

Mary Margaret

You can get a lot of sample sizes on line to try before you buy. You taste might change after WLS so don't stock up on to much.  For RTD I like EAS carb advantace. You can get those almost anywhere. krogers, walmart, sams etc. Powders I like Bopdy Fortress WalMart or you can try some at GNC.
Good Luck,
Robin

Thanks Robin, I am going to try and find the free samples as you said.  Then I am going to start looking at walmart and GNC for some powders.  You are right, things might change.  I have my first appointment on the 25th and I am excited and nervous about  my journey.  Thank you so much for responding.  It is nice that you did take the time.

Sorry they are not free but they send you one or two packs instead of a 5 pound tub of mix.

You can also buy individual servings of Unjury (www.unjury.com).  Everyone makes them a little differently -- some mix with water, some with milk... some add fruit, some mix with other things like SF hot chocolate or applesauce... some like it thicker and some like it thinner... it's really trial and error and what you can tolerate because everyone's taste is different and your taste will almost certainly change after surgery.  SOme really like the fruity "nectar" types of protien powders and otehrs don't (but definitely worth trying!).

Right now I am drinking lots of the Oh Yeah! RTD shakes (chocolate and vanilla only unfortunately) because I have been having trouble eating much after some plastic surgery.  They are pricey, but they come in individual bottles so you can at least try just one.

Hi Lora,

Thanks for the helpful hints.  What is RTD and where do you get it?  I would like to try some before I have my surgery.  I know now that my taste buds will probably change.

How many do you drink a day after surgery?  How many ounces etc.?

Thanks for taking the time to respond.   I really appreciate it.

RTD is just the abbreviation used for "ready to drink" -- the shakes that are pre-made rather than powder that you have to mix.  The only place I have found the Oh Yeah! is at one of our local health food stores and online, but some people say that the larger GNC stores have it.  I also sometimes drink the Aykins Advantage RTDs (which Walmart has for $6 for a pack of 4, but often has on sale for under $5).

I still have one protein supplement (usually a shake, but sometimes a protein bar) per day and I am almost 18 months out.  Except in the summer, I mix protein powder with SF hot chocolate so I don't even notice it.  In the summer I usually use the nectar protein powders and mix it with as little water as I can stand so I can just get it down quickly. (The nectar is tolerable, but not something I would CHOOSE to drink based on taste.)  Either way, it's about 8 ounces of liquid.

Thank you!  You have been a real help.  I was trying to figure out what kind of drinks to buy and where.  If you can have atkins drinks that is great they do have them here at walmart.

Sounds good and I will try both. I will look for the OH YEA, maybe they have it at our GNC.  Though it is a smaller store.  I hope they do.  I thought I would try to get on a partially liquid diet to get going and get used to it.

Thanks again for helping me!
