DS WLS
Yeah, I know it's been a while, but just in case this comes up again, I wanted to share. I just met with Dr. Rita this morning and asked her about her DS sleeve/pouch.
It's not actually a pouch at all, but smaller than the average DS sleeve, still taking up the lower, lessor curvature of the stomach, usually about 80-120 cc's in volume, and like the sleeve, leaves all working parts of the stomach intact. She says this portion is much less susceptible to ulcers. She leaves a 100cm common channel. She usually doesn't go any smaller, because she's found that her patients with shorter cc's had more issues with multiple bowel movements.

The illustration shows a different shape, but I assure you that all working parts are there and functioning with Dr. Rita's DS's. I'm living with it and have had great success. Also, if you saw me eat, you'd never think I had any pouch. I think it's merely a different shape than a sleeve. I've got a 3yr follow up appt with her in Janaury and I intend to ask her about the details of that. I'll report here what I find out.
OH, and Dr. Rita uses some interchangeable terminology, but the gal's sharp as a tack!

My DS surgery with Dr. Teel was done lap and not open so it took a little over 5 hours. It was by far, the best surgical experiece I've ever had in terms of being under and pain management. Living close to Columbus and always having procedures done at the larger hospitals, I always assumed I was receiving excellent care. Miami Valley hospital in Dayton put the Columbus hospitals to shame.
I am doing extremely well. I have no gas or poop issues. I have a BM once every 2-3 days. Gas is non-existant with the exception of when I eat White Castles...but that happened to me preop too. In my experience, all the gas/poop warnings were extrememly exaggerated. I understand that it could be a side effect...but that's the side effect of MANY things. To be totally honest, I had much more of an issue when I had my gallbladder removed in 99 than with my DS surgery. With that being said, many DSers claim that poop and gas issues are a direct result of diet and can be controlled or medicated. I've never seen any connection so I can not attest to that. What I can say is that Dr. Teel told me at a preop appointment that poop and gas issues were an unnecessary side effect as they can both be handled with medication. Again, since it's never been an issue, I've never had to inquire further with him.
As for the vitamins, it's not an issue either. I was concerned as a preop that it would be. I've never had a problem swallowing pills but since some are larger, I was concerned. Now, at almost a year out, I take 2 calciums, a multi, a B complex and a A/D in one swallow. No problems at all. I do that regime twice a day... once in the morning and once at night. Now, it's such a habit that I can't imagine not doing it. It's kinda like brushing your teeth, you know you should do it for health and well being (beside the reason of fresh breath). All my labs have been good and on a side note, my cholesterol went from 270s to the 150s in 6 months. My PCP is THRILLED!
Best wishes to you and best of luck in your WLS journey!

You answered a who lot of questions in of mine in this post lilke how Vitamins and the size of some of them effected your everyday living. My husband really appretiaded your post also cause he is now investigating the DS procedure. My DH is the one who saw the first commercial on lap band and we went together and I had the surgery. He is skinny man with little belly lol. He is very supportive of me and totally understands how and why I feel the way I do about being over wt.
