StomaphyX in Cincinnati

Does anyone know of any surgeons that are currently doing the Stomaphyx (or EROS) or any kind of ROSE (Revision Obesity Surgery, Endoscopic) procedures in the Cincinnati area?

I had a RNY with stomach staples over 20 years ago and have gained weight.  I am desparate to have the surgery repaired but dont know where to go with it.  I am uncertain if fixing the stoma would be best or if looking into a gastrectomy would be best.  I would like to find a doctor who is knowledgeable in all revisions and could give me advice on which avenue would be the best choice for me.  I just cannot seem to find any one doctor who does it all.  I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks!

Thanks, Robin.    I spoke with them and they do not take any insurance at all.  And they are VERY expensive.  I was hoping that there might be someone else that is doing it that is helping people get it done with some insurance coverage.  There is no way I can even consider having any revision done without insurance coverage.

Would you have any other suggestions?

Thanks

New Technology

Cincinnati Weight Loss Center offers several new technologies for weight regain after gastric bypass.  In addition to placing a gastric band around the failed bypass pouch ("band over bypass") we offer endoscopic suturing (ROSE), an incisionless procedure whereby the dilated bypass pouch is repaired by stitching from within a specialized stomach scope requiring no incisions.  Cincinnati Weight Loss Center is one of 8 centers in the United States offering this new technology.  Dr. Mobley and Dr. Watkins serve as consultants for several new companies with exciting new treatments for obesity.  Most of them are currently in non-disclosure status but just know that Cincinnati Weight Loss Center will always be at the forefront of new technology.

Check out Dr. Maguire in Dayton.  I know that he does revisions.  I know he won't revise a RNY to DS, but will instead do a distal RNY.  Look up Beth P.  She had a distal revision and is doing wonderfully.

I've heard of much disappointment with Stomaphyx and Rose from those on the Revisions board.  Some gain restriction for only a few months, and others report little or no change at all.  You'll want to first determine if you have a mechanical failure and then decide on options from there.

Hi Valerie:

Thanks for the information.  What is a distal RNY?

To tell you the truth, I am embarrassed to see Dr. Maguire?  He did my surgery 20+ years ago and I feel like such a failure.  I failed to stay in touch, etc.  when I was supposed to and when I needed to see him and was without insurance 15 or so years ago his office wouldn't take me on a lower fee basis.  So there is history there but more than anything, I feel like a failure going back to see him.

Thanks
Bari

Revision surgeons exist because revisions are needed.  It's not like you're the first, yanno?  PLUS, I'll bet he doesn't even have your file anymore, so he probably doesn't remember you.

A distal RNY will extend your intestinal bypass to that of the DSers.  You'll still have your RNY pouch and they can do some adjustments there if need be, but the malabsorption is greatly improved.  I've got a friend, Beth P who did it this year and is doing beautifully.  You have to be extremely vigilant with your vitamins though, because of the increased malabsorption, too.

Another option is to get a revision to the DS altogether, but no local docs (not even Maguire) do it.  It's much more complicated because they have to take the RNY pouch down completely before doing the DS.

Try Deaconess hospital WLS center.  513-559-2545 (I think--it could be 4525 I get the numbers mixed up).   Dr. Rodriguez does revisions I believe.  Check them out.  They are a "Center of Excellence" whatever that means.  Good luck!
