Just wanted to put my 2 cents in also. I had Dr. White... I think he is great!!! Very mellow and quiet, but willing to take all the time you need to answer questions and such. His nurse, Cathy, is absolutely wonderful, great at explaining everything, and helping to get everything set up. The support group meetings are really good too. Dr. White did my RNY at Toledo Hospital, (I don't think he does them any where else), my hospital stay was very nice & uneventful!! I am really very happy with the whole program.
Sorry to hear that you have IBS, talk to the doc about it, they can let you know how the RNY would affect you.
Sorry to say that I had never met Dr. Lane in person. When I had my surgery done, he was working in Bowling green, and I really didn't want to go to that hospital. I do believe he is now at UTMC, but I don't know much about their bariatric program yet.

MY JOURNEY BEGINS...
Dr. Lane just did my VSG this last week! He has been great! I have never been so pleased with a doctor before in my life! I would highly recommend him to anyone! I had my Duodenal Switch with Dr. Lane in May, 2008. I have lost over 200 pounds since I started eating better and excercising in February, 2008. For your reference, here are my weight stats and post-surgery loss information:
I have written a very honest review of Dr. Lane and will post it for you at the end of this post. It includes both good and bad things. Again, very honest.
The top portion of my Duodenal Switch, of course, is a VSG. I can tell you that Dr. Lane does a VERY agressive sleeve - mine was 2 ounces. I don't know about you, but before surgery I COULD EAT - ALOT! I am six months out and, today for example, was full at breakfast with four sausage links. I spread 10 "buffalo wings" out over this afternoon and evening for my second and third meals - I am satisfied after three.

From my first consultation with Dr. Lane I understood how much he cared about his work. He is an expert in laparoscopic as well as high-risk surgical procedures and is able to perform many more types of bariatric surgeries than most weight-loss surgeons. Dr. Lane took every precaution possible to ensure that I was able to undergo a complete Duodenal Switch – a more complicated and time intensive weight loss procedure than the RNY – while staying safe. Dr. Lane’s post-surgical care was acceptable up to one month post-op. However, much of the aftercare I have received after one month post-surgery is lacking. Specifically, Dr. Lane and his staff have been neglectful in meeting my routine care needs. By “routine care needs” I mean things like getting prescriptions, reviewing labs, and answering non-critical questions. For instance, I e-mailed Dr. Lane my 3-month labs on September 3rd for review. He did not respond. On September 30, I sent a follow-up e-mail. Today is October 2nd and he has still not responded. Notwithstanding the above area for improvement, Dr. Lane has always made himself available for my urgent and emergency after-care. When I went to the emergency room with inexplicable pain in my foot and ankle Dr. Lane called and texted back-and-forth with me while he was at an out-of-town medical conference. I, quite literally, put my life in his hands, did so without hesitation, and would do so again.

Dr. White is my surgeon and it is simply wonderful! He is kind of quiet, but he cares very much about his patients and he is a perfectionist when it comes to this procedure and making sure that we are ok.
His staff is wonderful too. You get all of the support you need. You can call whenever you have questions and we have a support group. No extra charge for these things.
As a matter of fact, he has even take patients from other surgeons. Some surgeons left their practice and left patients without after care. Most surgeons will not take another surgeons patients, but Dr. White actually offered simply because he cares.

I would suggest that you do a lot of research until you find a procedure that you are comfortable with and that will help you get the results you need/want.
I have not had any problems since surgery. I am in the hospital at the moment, but it does not appear to be related to my surgery at all. You can always go to the RNY board and ask if anyone on there had IBS prior to surgery and how it affected them.
