Did anyone have to do a two week liquid diet pre-op? If so, how did you deal with the nausea and headaches? I am sick and its only been two days- I have 12 more to go. My dietician told me to eat a lean protein if it gets unbearable but I don't like the choices. Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

Hi!  I had to do a 7 day liquid diet, which my doc had now changed to 14 days.  It was really hard, but keep your stomach full of liquid all the time.  I had to drink 5 cans of Slim Fast a day, plus I drank and drank and ate popsicles and ate SF Jello.  It does get easier once your body adjusts.  But this is very important to your surgery, so stay strong!!!    Cindy

My dietician just sent this e-mail to me earlier. I asked to verify what I can have: APPROPRIATE LIQUIDS FOR THIS DIET WOULD INCLUDE:   *HIGH PROTEIN NUTRITIONAL BEVERAGE (examples: low carb slim fast, zero carb isopure, boost glucose control, no sugar added carnation instant breakfast, glucerna, unjury, nectar), SPACED THROUGHOUT THE DAY, OR MIX PROTEIN POWDER WITH WATER, SKIM MILK, OF 1% MILK. PATIENTS FIND IT HELPFUL TO INCLUDE THESE SUPPLEMENTS FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER, AND A SNACK. DO NOT ADD EXTRA FOODS SUCH AS FRUIT TO THE BEVERAGE. YOU MAY AD EXTRACTS SUCH AS VANILLA, ALMOND, OR CINNAMON FOR ADDITIONAL FLAVOR.   IN ADDITION TO YOUR PROTEIN DRINK, YOU MUST CONTINUE TO INCLUDE ADDITIONAL LIQUIDS EACH DAY. EXAMPLES WOULD INCLUDE...   *SKIM MILK, 1% MILK, LACTAID, SOYMILK *CRYSTAL LIGHT, PROPEL, FRUIT-2-O, SUGAR-FREE KOOL AID, MINUTE MAID LIGHT *DECAF TEA *DILUTED FRUIT JUICE (100% FRUIT JUICE MIXED 50:50 WITH WATER) *SUGAR-FREE POPSICLES *SMALL AMOUNTS OF BROTH *WATER (MINIMUM 48 OUNCES DAILY)   BE SURE TO CONTINE TAKING YOUR DAILY VITAMINS AND CALCIUM AS DIRECTED!

I went on optifast for two weeks but I was aloud 5 shakes 2 protein bars and one lean cuisine a day. I started mine on Dec 11 and went to my surgery which was the day after xmas. It was not fun but I did lose 15 pounds.

I was on MediFast.  Boy that stuff was nasty.  They did finally allow me to substitute 6 oz. of tuna for one of the shakes.  I had a lot of choices, like soups, oatmeal, shakes and protein bars (those saved me, they were good)  I did lose around 13 lbs.  There are so many different diets.  Some say slim fast shakes and a weigh****chers meal at night.  My daughter was just banded yesterday and her pre op was optional.  One thing I did do was when we'd go to Applebees I'd get the chicken noodle soup with just the broth.  It was delicious.  Good luck with your pre op and surgery.

Hugs,   Peggy

Thanks so much. I am so restricted. I could handle this if I could eat even pudding or oatmeal. I will be ok its day 3 and things are getting alittle better. I just feel really weak and my head hurts.

I had to smile and make my first post when I saw this -- we have the same sx (Dr. Dan) and I'm scheduled for early August '08, and I have 4 weeks of Optifast to look forward to starting July 7th :-). Kate

I am currently on the 2 week pre-op liquid diet and it is tough (considering today is my birthday and I can't celebrate).  My surgery date is 6/23/08.  Anyway.  I have found that the broth helps tremendously!  I had a terrible headache yesterday and drank some broth and it really seemed to help!  Jus****ch the sodium! I was given only 2 choices:  4 cans of the Slim Fast or 5-1/2 packages of the Carnations Breakfast drink (SF of course).  SF popsicles and jello were also mentioned as OK to use.  Hope this helps and best of luck to you!

So no cake or ice cream but I've already startedreceiving cards and gifts. All is well!! I feel really good and the liquid diet is easier to handle after surgery!
