I am starting my liquid diet on Monday. All I know is that I am to do 800 calories a day. I can have slimfast ultima or carnation instant breakfast. I was wondering if anyone knew if they were suppose to be sugar free? I am thinking no, because sugar free slimfast is impossible to find...and when you add up the calories it makes since...4 1/2 a day on 800 calories, and they are 190 a piece. But some people told me they did sugar free....any thoughts?

As long as you can stay within the caloric restriction, I don't know of any reason that they would need to be sugar free if yiour surgeon did not specifically tell you so.  Some people may have purchased the SF variety of the Carnation Instant Breakfast so they could use them post-op (when they DO have to be SF). If you can find SF ones that would be best. The main reason for the pre-op diet is so that you are eating less carbs and your liver will need to expell sugar and inturn your liver will shrink and your doctor will have more room to do the surgery Lap. My surgeon supplies our pre-op diets. Good luck

Hi, my nutritionist gave me a list of protein supplements. She listed 3 slim fast-low carb diet(maybe that is what people mean by diet),high protein and optima. Looks like the low carb has the best numbers-cal190,prot-20,sug-1, and is 11oz. I bought some of the high protein before seeing her and it has 11gr of sugar. Our 2 week liquid inclided protein shakes, no pieces soup(blend & strain), cream of wheat or rice, sf pudding & jello. Then we follow a clear liquid diet 2 days before surgery with bowel prep the day before. A bullet is great at this time, I use it all the time. Blend protein shakes with ice-yum! Can add beneprotein to soups and drinks, the protein will help with your hunger. Also dry milk powder is good source of protein to add to shakes etc. Hope this helps. I start clear liquids tomorrow, can't wait. Linda

Thanks for all the replys. I guess it is any slim fast optima and even regular carnation. You just have to stay below 800 calories a day. So they told me 5 a day for the slim fast, and that adds up...190 calories times 5, puts me just below the 800 mark. So I am good to go. I start Monday. I am actually ok with it. This past week I have been doing 2 slim fast and a small meal. Normally the pre packaged weigh****chers. I am not hungry, and have lots of energy. I even did pilates tonight with a friend. :)

Hi! Just had my surgery on Tuesday at Cleveland Clinic, with Dr. Schauer.  As far as drinking Slim Fast, you HAVE to get the low carb kind.  I was relying on the ultima, too, til I found out each one has 18 grams of sugar.  I didn't know they made surar free Slim Fast.  The low carb Slim fast should cut out most of the sugars.  I was sabotaging myself!!  Lost 2 lbs the first week, then after my pre-op visit on Jan. 28th and was told to drink either sugar free Instant Carnation Breakfast or the Low Carb Slim Fast. I sarted drinking the Instant carnation Breakfast., and lost 10 lbs the second week. Just my two cents!!

Ok so I have been so paranoid, about these drinks. I called the clinic and talked to a fellow. So , he said since I have already lost over 30 pounds...I dont need to stress. I can just use the slim fast ultima, and/or carnation. Just stay uner the 800 calorie mark. But he said I could also do SF jello and popcicle...so I am ok there. :) I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. Plus, I told him how much my exercise has increased....still doing 2 mile walks, but now up to four days a week from two, and now weight training with my trainer, and swimming. So I think I will be ok. Thanks for everyones help.
