gastric sleeve and different WLS

Hello this is Dr. Rodriguez at Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati. Lots of folks have been asking questions about the gastric sleeve.  The best way to think about the gastric sleeve is a mid way point between Lap Band and gastric bypass. You get full quickly when eating like the band and the bypass, but you do not get the dumping syndrome of the bypass. Unlike the Lap Band there is not fiddling with fills, adjustments or slips. The one exciting thing about the sleeve, is that it appears to have a curative effect on diabetes, just like the bypass. As I tell anyone interested in WLS, always get your information from a bona fide WLS surgeon, particularly those who are Centers of Excellence in bariatric surgery. I have a friend who got the sleeve in sept. 06 her surgery went very well and she lost about 80lbs. in the first 7 months,  But then she started to gain weight back, she thinks it was because she got used to the smaller stomach, and she begun to overeat maybe not in the same way, but making poor choices, I still think its a good surgery i  heard the risk are fewer than the RNY, but i dont think its for people *****ally have problems controling their food intake, and of couse all overweight people do or else they could lose it on their own. but i think some people do better than others, I am getting the RNY hopefully in april, i started off wanting the sleeve but I am afraid the same thing will happen to me. even though the dumping syndrome does not sound like a lot of fun, i almost feel i need somthing like that to reach my weight loss goal.I really do wish i could get the sleeve mostly because the risk are fewer. I guess all i am saying everyone needs to do their homework and pick the best WLS for them

You are correct in saying that anyone looking for WLS must do their homework. All WLS operations are different and work differently. The gastric sleeve is a restrictive porcedure, intended to make a person full quickly when they eat (like the Lap Band and the VBG). The neat thing about it, is that there is no artificial device to fiddle with, no fills to return for. Any WLS must be combined with a good nutrition program and an aerobic exercise program. Correct food choices and exercise are the final components to make WLS work. Good luck & Good health to all.
