Hi everyone, I'm not real sure on how to use the forum, but I'm going to try it anyway. I am Jessie. Realitivity a small town potato. I've  been coming to this site for a few weeks now, but I've  been quiet. Not that I'm not a chatty little mouse (shh! don't tell anyone) but the weight loss you have talked about seemed unatainable (BTW, GREAT JOB!) to me. Yesterday I saw my WLS doctor (Dr.Brian Lane) and got the ball rolling on the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery. I'm scared to death! And absolutely excited! I feel like a sweet and sour dish. LOL Anyway, the surgery looks complicated and that is the part that I worry about, of course, this whole dumping thing isn't thrilling either. But facts are facts. I am extreemely overweight. I am not doing my body any favors. And it's going to take a severe action to stop the overeating. I have food issues. I see something I want, and I eat it. And while I'm eating it, I'm thinking about what I'll want later. This vicious circle is tire around my body that has placed me center lane into the traffic of diabetes, hypertension, ddd, hypothyroidism. Well, I guess thats it for now. I have a young son who just got home from school. I sure could use "been there and done that" stories. and few prayers would be nice too. Huggz, Jess

WELCOME JESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you TURST your doc and he/she has experence in WLS it's not that complicated.  Check them out and do your research on them.  I went to 2 info sessions and spent HUNDEREDS for hours on line researching 3 docs before I picked one.  A good Doc will tell you all the GOOD AND BAD about any WLS types RNY, BAND, BDP/DS, etc. then you can chose which is right for you.  I'm almost 4 years out and YES I DO STILL DUMP if I eat something worng or to much and to me this is a GREAT THING. It keeps me in check so to speak.  You can read my story if you want it reads from the BOTTOM UP (oldes on bottom newest on top). You just ckick on the picture and go from there.  Keep those questions coming We're here when ever you need us.  Robin

Hi Jess, Welcome.  I too, started out quite big... 370 lbs and now weigh 179 with about 20 of that excess skin.  I too, looked at different doctors and hospitals and made my choice based on the info that was available to me.  I have had 3 C's and a hernia surgery prior to RNY.  Was the RNY easy?  No, but I felt it was easier than the 3 C's.  This time, I only had myself to take care of...not a baby.  Would I do the surgery again?  Yes, in a heartbeat.  It was the best 50th bday gift any one could give me, the gift of good health.  Do I still dump?  Yep and am thankful for it.  It helps to keep me on the straight and narrow.  You have my prayers and remember, "I can do all things through Christ who strenghtens me."  Good luck on your search.   Linda

Thank you Ladies for your responses. I am worried about the dumping, But I already have IBS, and so I know the ways to avoid it, and that is with careful choices. Sounds like the same thing you expierence with the dumping. I've decided, dumping or no dumping, this surgery will give me back quality of life and improved health. Very few surgies can offer that. So what do you eat, assuming that you need to eat protein whenever possible? I drink a sparkling water that I buy at Wal*mart (love the white grape). Will I be able to drink it? I believe it does have carbonation. Thanks for your help. Be Blessed Jess

Hi Jess, Did you and Dr. Lane talk about the DS?  I'm pretty sure he does that procedure too.  I'm asking because dumping is extremely rare with the DS.

Hi, Jesse.   Please don't worry too much about the procedure itself... like Val said, as long as you have a qualified and experienced surgeon, it isn't THAT complicated.  It's normal to be scared, though.  I, too, was very excited when surgery day finally came, but when my surgeon came in to see me in the prep area, they had not yet put in my IV (and therefore I had not yet gotten what my surgeon refers to as "courage medicine").  I was so scared that I was in tears and she asked me if I was sure I wanted to go ahead with the surgery.  I assured her that I definitely wanted to do it, but that I was scared and needed the "courage medicine" ASAP! Please don't worry too much about dumping, either.  Think of it as your body's was of makign sure you remain diligent about making good food choices!  Not everyone dumps, by the way, and some people are more sensitive than others.  I am 9 weeks out and have not dumped, vomited, or had the "foamies".  (Well, ok, I vomited when I had to take some barium fro a follow-up CAT scan, btu never from eating).  The worst I have had is some pain and nausea that passed relatively quickly after either eating too fast or eating something that my pouch didn't like.  I have no trouble with natural sugar in fruit or fruit juice (not-from-concentrate or no-sugar-added), but I know several people who cannot drink fruit juice at all. I had open surgery, and have had some issues with incision oozing and continuing pain, but I am down almost 50 pounds and am starting to see changes in my body that convince me that this was the best thing I have ever done for my health.  It's scary, but it's worth it! Feel free to e-mail me if you need to talk. Lora

Hi Jess, My name is Tami and I just joined yesterday.  I have also chosen Dr. Lane in Bowling Green.  I'm not sure how this is going to go and I'm quite scared, and have heard a lot of negative comments from people just this week alone.  My inital consultation is the last Wednesday of November.  I would love to go through this with you if you want to with me.  I need someone to keep me calm!! One way to look at dumping is that its a tool to keep you away from the "bad" things.  I went through the same feelings as I'm sure many of us did. I'm now 8 months out and down 100 pounds. It feels great. I have a 6 year old daughter and she kept me motivated to do it. She was the star I would reach for when it seemed I could not do more. Once you get the date it will all seem so worth it. Then you'll have the surgery and be glad. I'd research the surgan just so you know. I looked for the good and the bad so that I'd know the things that can go right and wrong. Made me feel more prepared. Good luck and if we can ever be of any help just let us know
