Anyone diagnosed with Vitamin D-2 deficiency?

After several months of feeling weak, I had some blood tests done. It turns out that I am extremely low in Vitamin D-2.  I would never have imagined this.  Now I have to go through a regimen of 50,000 unites of Vitamin D-2 every day for 2 weeks and then once per week afterwards until my next testing. Has anyone else had this or know what causes it?  Thanks and God Bless.  Tootsie

I was diagnosed with a deficiency and I can't remember if it was Vitamin D or K. I have to take 50,000 IU (international units) once a week for 12 weeks.

I know St. Vincent's is doing a study on this because they are finding so many people have deficiencies at the pre-op stage...............

Hi Denise, Thanks for your response. Looks like we have  the same surgeon! I would like to know who to contact at St. VIncent's regarding the study. I am not pre-op.  I am post of by 3+ years.  I never had this deficiency before. If you have any further info, I would apprectiate it. Thanks, Tootsie  :-)

On my consent form, it lists the following:

Principal Investigators:

Natalia Mahlay, M.D. and Lisena Verka, M.D.
St. Vincent's
216.861.6200

Co-Investigator:

Mark Salamone, D.O.

I know that Dr. Salamone is located in Dr. Ben-Meir's office at the Cleveland Center for Bariatric Surgery.

The study's purpose is to determine the frequency of vitamin D deficiency in patients seeking weight reduction surgery (since overweight patients seem at an increased risk of vitamin D deificiency) and to determine the effectiveness of different doses of Vitamin D after gastric bypass surgery.

Hope you find this information useful.

Denise

I am about 2 1/2 years post op and have also developed a Vitamin D deficiency which has been fairly resistant to treatment.  I was tested the first time about April or May of this year and prescribed the 50,000 units/week for 8 weeks., restested and still low and did the 50,00 units/week a second 8 weeks, to be retested again just 1-2 weeks ago and still low, so now on 12 weeks of the 50,000 units plus a daily 1000 IU.  My feeling is that it is related to malabsorption and lack of sun. They are finding that it is much more common than anyone realized previously. Good luck with your treatment. Chris

It  has been a really long time since I posted my original question about Vit D deficiency, but since mg initial post I have been through multiple rounds of the vitamin D therapy probably at least 4-5 of the 50,000 units 1/week for 8-12 weeks. Level still low as of 12/07 and on another round.  A good friend who had surgery same time as I did has also been through similar routine.  I believe that recent research is showing that it is a much more common deficiency in the general public than previously thought due to many people not exposed to adequate sunlight and use of sunscreen, even if you live in an area with lots of sun.  I see that most of the previous posts were from Ohioans and we know we don't always get a lot of sun for a good part of the year.  Interesting to hear about the study. Thanks, even though this has been a long time since the other posts.
