I would like to get responses from people who are at least 3 years and more please. I had heard  recently that some patients develop addictions after weight loss surgery. I have had a few bizarre ones which I am sure someone out there could relate to.

If you go out to the main board, you'll see people regaining left and right.  This isn't a secret at all and it's definitely not a free ride.

I was a alcohlic in my 20s I did have a drinking problem for 1 year after my surgery. I have mellowed out since but i did get pretty bad and was in rehab. Then i also picked up smoking pot and cigs. Im 49 I divorced my husband of 16 years because we had nothing for many years just got married again to a husband that is clean from all that and he is helping me deal with the past addictions. It hasnt been easy. But there is gold at the end of the tunnel hugs barb

I did find an general article on addictions after surgery, but it did not give any specific details other than it appears to be psychological, and they haven't been able to directly correlate it to the surgery. For me, it took the form of excessive shopping--for hours daily for months. Thank Goodness I was able to pay for all of these coats, jackets, tops, accessories which are in my closets with the tags still attached. I did not need any of these items. I was not this type of person before-buying excessively.  Also I have gone through some strange food fetishes--like I had to eat  some chestnuts every day for 6 months and then it stopped abruptly. I cannot explain it. My hubby thought I was nuts looking for chestnuts all over the city, not to mention they are $7.99 a jar. Only one grocery store even carries them after the Holidays. I would like to know if other people have had these strange experiences. I have heard of people abusing alcohol, drugs and taking up smoking, but fortunately I haven't gone that route. Thanks to all who have shared. God Bless.

I was 2 yrs out on Aug.12 and funny you should mention the foods things.  I have them all the time, like I'm pregnant again...but NOT A CHANCE.....this month its instant mashed tatos...can't get enough..they just taste so good...I have this all the time with different things, only since the surgery though also Meijers brand deli Maple ham...so good, I get a pound, hide it from the rest of the family so no one eats it and its gone within about 2 days...I snack on it....also baby popcorn shrimp....well as least its protein..thats what I tell myself...LOL.....I have actually gained 14Lbs but that was due to the fact I needed to gain some back...got too thin...119Lbs...looked really sick on me....so now people arent coming up to me and asking if Im ok..and I have better color in my skin also....maybe its the ham, shrimp and other foods I eat with a good color of pink..LOL...
