What do you eat when in a hurry?
I am planning an RNY at Riverside, hopefully in October or November. I am in week 3 of the 12 week supervised diet, trying to get in all of my fruits, vegetables and proteins. Once you have the surgery, what are some ideas for grabbing a quick meal? I was running late for an appointment this morning (cardio consult) and ended up getting an Egg McMuffin. What would be a viable option once I have the RNY?
The answer is yes and no!!!!!!!!!!!!
When you are first post op you would not be able to eat that much and a lot of people have trouble with bread. You could eat the egg and maybe the meat but not the bread.
I still don't eat the McDonalds ones even at 3.5 years out but I can eat the Jimmy Dean ones. And even they I can't eat a whole one at times. I leave off 1/2 of the muffin.
They are called D-Lights Canadian Bacon Egg Whits & cheese on a Whole Grain Muffin.
230 cals
50 from fat
fat grams 6
carbs 30g HIGH sometimes you need them
protein 14 g
As for quick meals, I keep String cheese, Healthy Choice turkey, yogurt made with splenda, EAS ready to dring shakes.
A lot of people will keep beef jerkey on hand to chew.
Good Luck,
Robin
Hi --
I had RNY at Riverside on 6/18 with Dr. Myers. They will take great care of you! I asked the dieticians at the McConnell Center the same question. They recommend peanut butter (available in individual packets), sugar free yogurt, protein bars (but read the label carefully -- these can be high in sugar) or those little Starkist Tuna Salad to go things (it's tuna that comes with mayo, crackers, etc.). Except for the yogurt, these are all shelf stable and you can keep in your purse or car for those "on the run" times. Good luck -- keep in touch!

Those sound like pretty good ideas. I have this question and a bunch of others for the nut. My next visit is July 17th.
After your initial evaluation day - when do you actually return to the Fresh Start office? When you are done with the nutritionist and approved for surgery? I was going to send Annie an email, but thought I'd ask since you have already been through the process. I was kind of odd - I was the only one in for an evaluation - and did not even see Dr. Myers. He and Annie were both on vacation that day. Dr. Zee said that Dr. Myers would see me on one of my other visits, but I am unsure of what other visits I will have.
Also, how long did you wait for your insurance approval? I have Anthem and am wondering how long I can expect to wait.
Hi Maureen --
The next time you see the Fresh Start people will probably be at your pre-op appt -- about 2 weeks before surgery. That's how it was for me, but I switched over from the program at Ohio State, so it might be different for you.
You have to see the dieticians 3 times, before they submit you for insurance approval (over a 2 month period). My company approved me in 2 days (HealthReach) but it will vary based on your company. I don't know about Anthem -- you could call Cheri at Fresh Start and she can give you a better idea. She does all the insurance approvals and is really nice to work with.
Dr. Myers is great -- very kind. On the evaluation day, all he does is go over the BMI chart and talk to you about where you want to be on the chart, and what to expect with RNY vs. Lap Band. Dr. Zee does all of the medical stuff on that day. If you want to meet Dr. Myers sooner than your pre-op, just call and ask. They do all of their appointments on Thursdays, so I'm sure that he would schedule you in. Good luck with your journey-- you can just email me directly if you want -- [email protected]. Keep in touch!
